Courses

As a fresh Ph.D. student, I am required to take a number of courses at 500 level and above.

In the first semester, Fall 2008, I took the following four courses:
  • EE 530 Optical Materials, Instruments & Devices
  • EE 539 Engineering Quantum Mechanics
  • EE 558 Optical Fiber Communication System
  • EE 529 Optics
In the second semester, Spring 2009, I took the following three courses:
  • EE 540 Quantum Electronics
  • EE 531 Nonlinear Optics
  • MS/EE 501 Solid State Physics
In the third semester, Fall 2009, I will be taking the following course:
  • EE 570a Advanced Electromagnetic Theory

Research

I have yet to decide what to do as my main research direction. I am currently taking part in research in both Professor Willner's lab and Professor Steier's lab. For the moment, I am interested in compact photonic devices, such as silicon and polymer based waveguides.

In Professor Willner's lab, I am doing some numerical simulations. I have experiences in C++ and MATLAB. I am now learning FDTD and COMSOL. I am also building up an experimental setup for testing photonic devices.

In Professor Steier's lab, I am learning how to make polymer waveguides and sensors with sol gel technique.
