STUDENT WAVES March 20, 2000 (No. 100)

YOUTHFUL DIARY

"Saturday, March 29. Snow, then clearing.
Sensei is exceedingly weak.
I told him: 'Just a few days to go. There have been no accidents or mishaps.
told him: 'Just a few days to go. There have been no accidents or mishaps.
Please rest assured. The top leaders are also arriving steadily.'
Sensei said, 'Is that right?' with a reassured look. Then he strictly
appealed to me, 'Never slacken in your pursuit [against evil].' Could only nod in
agreement with this great general's command."
>From A Youthful Diary, p. 388.

Congratulations! We are all victors in this historic moment with the
Soka Gakkai's victory in the Seattle Incident Trial. (Please see details
below.)

One of President Toda's last wills to President Ikeda was to never slacken
in his pursuit against corruption and injustice. Our victory on this day,
March 20th (March 21st in Japan), marks a decisive moment in our quest for truth
and justice over the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood. President Ikeda's life
itself has been proof that justice will prevail. Let's all celebrate as we
continue our efforts in the Student Division to protect our noble kosen-rufu movement
and bring about a new consciousness in the 21st century; a consciousness that
confirms religion exists to serve the people.

Congratulations!!!
Daisaku, Wendy, Boston and Maggie

VICTORY IN THE SEATTLE INCIDENT TRIAL

The Tokyo District Court has just found the Soka Gakkai and its
publications not guilty of libel in the Seattle Incident trial, thus rejecting the
defamation lawsuit filed against the Soka Gakkai by High Priest Nikken Abe and
Nichiren Shoshu.

The Soka Gakkai in June 1992 published Mrs. Hiroe Clow’s account of being
called by Seattle police in the early morning hours of March 20, 1963, to
a downtown site where High Priest Nikken, then the Nichiren Shoshu Study
Department leader, had been involved in an altercation with prostitutes.
High Priest Nikken publicly and in print then called Mrs. Clow a liar. In
September 1992, she filed a libel suit in the Los Angeles Superior Court that was
eventually dismissed on jurisdictional grounds; it never reached the trial
stage.
Nichiren Shoshu decided to sue the Soka Gakkai in December 1993, leading
to the just-completed trial that lasted several years.

The verdict was announced almost exactly 37 years after the incident
occurred. We will report more details of the decision, including the
wording of the ruling and Nichiren Shoshu’s reaction, as they become available.
