STUDENT WAVES Oct. 8, 1999 (No. 83)

YOUTH DIVISION CONFERENCE IN FLORIDA
A youth division conference has been
announced for Nov. 11-14 at the FNCC. This conference will be for both
young men's division and young women's division members ages 18 and up.
Student division members are invited! The conference will feature a
lecture on Nichiren Daishonin's writings, a Q-and-A session on our mission
in the 21st century and study of the mentor-and-disciple relationship and
the temple issue. This will be the only youth division conference at the
FNCC this year, and it will serve as a kickoff toward next year and the
21st century. How do you apply to attend? You need to go through your
region student division or youth division leaders. By the way, the SGI's
theme for next year has just been announced: "Opening the 21st Century --
the Year of Youth" (tentative translation).

STUDENT DIVISION RESOLUTION
On Sept. 25, student division members from
throughout the country met in Los Angeles to discuss what they want to do
about the temple issue -- both as individuals and as a student division
organization. However, there was not enough time to agree on a joint
resolution. The idea then came up to make this a nationwide project and
involve all student division members. The students from your area who came
to Los Angeles have the discussion questions; we suggest that you get
together and have a meeting to discuss the questions as a group. Then,
send your ideas about what we should do to Jeff Farr at jfarr@sgi-usa.org.
If it's difficult to gather as a group, you can communicate via e-mail and
phone to get all the students' input. We want to receive everyone's
thoughts by Friday, Nov. 5. Then we'll compile them into a resolution and
present them to SGI President Ikeda for Nov. 18, Soka Gakkai Founding Day.
We'll also publish the resolution in Student Waves. If you have any
questions or need the discussion questions, please e-mail Jeff Farr.

PRESIDENT IKEDA EMPHASIZES THE DISTRICT
The SGI president has a new essay
on the importance of the district, which will appear in the Oct. 22 World
Tribune. He writes that "the Lotus Sutra describes this strife-filled saha
world as the True Land where the Buddha has always dwelled. No matter
where, the place where you decide to work for kosen-rufu is the Land of
Eternally Tranquil Light, filled with glory and victory. It is the place
you have chosen from the infinite past. In the SGI organization, the
district is the foundation of eternal victory and a base for people’s
happiness. The district is the True Land of kosen-rufu and of attaining
Buddhahood in this lifetime. To shun it is to lose sight of the place for
one’s true mission in this world." President Ikeda explains that he, too,
was active in a district when he was young, serving as a group young men’s
division leader and later as a district leader of Omori District in
Tokyo’s Kamata Chapter. For information on subscribing to the World
Tribune, call 1-800-835-4558 or e-mail SGISUBS@aol.com.
