STUDENT WAVES Sept. 24, 1999 (No. 81)
YOUTH WILL CHANGE THE TIMES
In SGI President Ikeda's Sept. 10 speech, he says: "I fear nothing. All that a human being should fear is how justice will judge you. I want the youth of Japan to firmly inherit my spirit in this regard. It is deplorable if youth stand by and condone the behavior of those who arrogantly hold their fellow citizens in contempt, who have no scruple in twisting and misrepresenting historical facts and who are authoritarian to the very core. It is up to you, the youth division members, the youth of the SGI, to change the way things are." This speech was given during the recent SGI Youth Training Course. The entire speech will be in the Oct. 8 issue of the World Tribune. For information on subscribing to the World Tribune, call 1-800-835-4558 or e-mail SGISUBS@aol.com.
NATIONWIDE GATHERING
The SGI-USA student division is celebrating its third birthday with more than 100 members gathering for a nationwide student division meeting in Los Angeles. This is our first nationwide gathering since last summer's FNCC student division conference - and only the second time that we've had such a nationwide gathering. The students will study two of President Ikeda's essays, "A Revolution Dawns" (Feb. 5 World Tribune) and "Change the Times!" (July 30 World Tribune). The group will discuss a variety of student issues and make its own resolution about the temple issue.
ANOTHER TEMPLE LEAVES
On Sept. 9, another Nichiren Shoshu temple, Daien-ji in Kanagawa Prefecture (close to Tokyo), seceded from Nichiren Shoshu. This is the third temple to leave Nichiren Shoshu this year. Mr. Bando Sato, Daien-ji's chief priest, said in a letter to Nikken that the revelation of the high priest's doubt in the Dai-Gohonzon (see the Sept. 10 World Tribune) led him to his decision. Mr. Sato left Nichiren Shoshu together with his three sons, all of them Nichiren Shoshu priests as well. Mr. Sato concludes his letter to Nikken by saying: "Daien-ji was completed r. Sato concludes his letter to Nikken by saying: "Daien-ji was completed as the 10th of the 200 temples whose construction was initiated by Soka Gakkai Honorary President Ikeda. Daien-ji’s construction was supported by the sincere donations of Gakkai members in the Yamato area of Kanagawa Prefecture. It was to serve their activities for kosen-rufu. And I believe that this temple should be returned to those members who made the donations for its construction, so that they can use it freely, for its original purpose. This is how I feel about this temple. Returning it to them is the right thing to do." See the Oct. 1 World Tribune for this story.
