About Us

The Value Creation Society here at USC is a Buddhist organization based on Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. This organization was established at USC in 1998, primarily as a way to bring Buddhists of this sect together to chant, study, and encourage one another to create value through our daily activities as students. In addition, VCS has made a committment to world peace by helping others throughout the USC community at large.

What We Believe...

In short, we believe that Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism, a humanistic philosophy of infinite respect for the sanctity of life, enables individuals to cultivate and bring forth their inherent highest potential to face and surmount the obstacles in our daily lives and the obstacles facing humankind, respecting all individuals regardless of race, religion, or historical backround, and realizing a society of prosperous coexistence.

Our core philosophy is rooted in the concept of "human revolution," a process of inner transformation that centers on the idea that each act we take has an influence that extends beyond its immediate context to affect the vast and complex web of life.

The Practice...

The basic prayer or chant of this Buddhism is "Nam-myo-ho-renge-kyo." The workings of the universe are an expression of this single principle or Law- Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. By chanting this phrase, we begin to put our lives in harmony with this Law, and individuals can unlock their hidden potential and achieve creative harmony with their environment.

Heritage...

VCS is a representative of Soka Gakkai International-USA, which is an American Buddhist movement that promotes peace and individual happiness based upon Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. SGI-USA works in assotiation with 75 other SGI organizations comprising members in more than half the world's countries. SGI-USA activities are driven by our understanding of the inseparable link between individual happiness and the peace and prosperity of our diverse communities.
