Thursday and Friday, 4/21-22/05 KAP 248
USC SIAM Chapter and MGSA are jointly organizing a backgammon tournament this Thursday and Friday, April 21-22. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are participating and the times that you would be available for the tournament. The first eliminations will start on Thursday (between 2:30 and 5:30 PM), and will continue on Friday after 11 AM. We project that the finals would be completed by 1:30 PM. If you are just a beginner and want to learn or practice before your match, you may come at the beginning of the session on Thursday. The first three runners will get prizes in the form of Bookstore checks. A few other prizes might be possible for the participants. Some refreshments will also be provided. The location for the tournament has not been finalized but we are thinking of the Math Commons Room (KAP 248) for the event. More details will be provided soon. If you are interested, reply to this e-mail or write an e-mail to mgsa@usc.edu by also indicating your available times for the tournament.

"Aspects of Reservoir Characterization from Waterflood Performance Data"
Abstract: Analytical techniques for prediction of waterfloods using homogeneous models are non representative of behaviors observed for actual reservoirs. We have noted, however, that a scrutiny of such deviations can lead to estimation techniques for characterization of permeability contrast in the formation. This study presents the results of studies conducted on the behavior of producing wells in a waterflood as affected by formation stratification, crossflow and lateral variation in rock properties. The purpose of the study was to derive useful reservoir characterization information from the embedded signals in waterflood performance data.

LMI Representation of an LQR problem and Applications in Dissipative Control of Semiactive Structures with Smart Dampers
Baris Erkus, Ph.D. Candidate, Civil and Enviromental Engineering
In this presentation, first, a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problem is represented as an eigenvalue problem (EVP) in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMI). While such representations are well-known for standard H2 and Hinf control problems, a representation for the LQR problem that is widely used in civil engineering is not well-known. Then, the EVP problem is used in dissipative control of semiactive structures with smart dampers introducing dissipativity indices based on the mean energy flow rate concept.

MONDAY, 2/28/05, KAP 265, 2:00 - 3:00 PM

"HTML Tutorial I"
The basic principles in HTML coding, file structure, placing HTML on the web using FTP will be discussed. We will learn how to write a simple HTML code (but good enough to create a nice personal web page). We are also going to discuss briefly some key issues in web design (colors in the web, images, good and bad web sites), the details of which will be covered in "HTML Tutorial II", a continuation event. Some handouts will be provided for the participants, too.
Handout is here

"Parallel implementation of a domain decomposition method for solving elliptic differential equations"
Abstract:
We use FETI-DP (Finite Element Tearing and Interconnection Dual-Primal) method to solve an elliptic equation with discontinuous diffusion coefficients. A weak continuity (mortar) condition is imposed on the interfaces between the subdomains where we have non-matching triangulations. Problem on the interfaces is solved by the pcg iterations in which process only solvers on the subdomains are employed. We present an almost optimal preconditioner and parallel results on up to 484 processors showing that the method is well scalable.
