Candidates

PRESIDENT

Ryan Ung:
My name is Ryan Ung and I’m going to be running for President.  I am currently a third year Business major and in my third semester as an ITP Web Technologies and Applications minor.  The end of this semester will mark my third semester as an ISA member and my first semester serving on ISA’s Executive Board.  I’ve enjoyed and learned a lot from all of the events that this year’s e-board has planned and I think that as President, I can help achieve that same attitude with future ISA members.

Over the past semester, I’ve worked closely with Cesar Sanchez and Joe Espina, our President and Executive Vice President, to bring companies to speak at our weekly technology series and to market these speakers. I created all of the advertisements seen around campus in addition to being the contact person for advertising within the Computer Science department, the Engineering School, the Business School, and Annenberg School of Communications. Furthermore, I worked closely with Davita Saraf, my counterpart in SCA, to get the word out about ISA/SCA’s joint “Expo of Experts: IT and Consulting”. From the number of people who showed up that night, we considered our marketing efforts a complete success.

As President of ISA for Spring 2003, I hope to find creative ways to increase the number of ISA members, attracting more of a younger crowd of underclassmen. As we all know, the IS/tech economy has taken a downturn, making it harder for IT people to find jobs.  I anticipate a continual level of excellence of Technology Series which current ISA members have grown used to in the past. Lastly, I desire for ISA to take on projects in which its members will become known in the IS world, giving them easier access to jobs that might not have necessarily been known previously.

I know through teamwork and dedication, we can all help to make the best experience with ISA.

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

Susan Taing
I have been a member of ISA for a semester. Because I had a great experience as an active member and wanted to be more involved, I became an officer the following semester. Being the VP of Finance this fall gave me a better understanding as to where I stand when it comes to the club. I found myself devoting a lot of time to the club, even if some of the behind the scenes were not related to my position. I enjoy the teamwork, what the club is about and what makes it work.

As the Executive Vice President, I want to continue bringing in different companies and guest speakers as we have been doing this semester. I know IS isn’t always about consulting—there’s other areas that need IS. My goal for next semester in is to give the club some exposure to the entertainment industry in addition to what we’re offering this fall. I plan to work on getting the contacts during the winter break.

VP of TECHNOLOGY
VP of ACTIVITIES

Patrick Quan
My name is Patrick Quan and I would like to run for the position of VP of Activities for ISA. Before joining ISA I was the Vice President of Phi Beta Lambda, a business organization from 2000-2001, as a result I can provide leadership to the e-board.

I have already served on the e-board for the Fall 2002 semester as the VP of Technology.  The reason I have chosen to run for this position is because I want to have more involvement with the ISA’s activities and I wasn’t satisfied doing so as VP of Technology.  But as VP of Technology I planned the office tour with Delliote Consulting and I feel ready to organize other various activities as well..  I have shown my dedication by being consistent with my attendance and work at club meetings, social activities and e-board meetings.  In the Fall 2002 have been able to juggle a job, my student responsibilities and my position as VP of Technology quite well and I’m sure to be able to continue to do so for the Spring 2003.

Thank you and I hope you will consider me for this position
VP of FINANCE

Andy Chan:
In deciding what position I wanted to apply for, I asked myself this question: What are my qualifications?  I thought long and hard about all that I’ve learned in school and the experiences that I have gone through.  I have come to the realization that I’m a highly motivated, energetic, dedicated, and detail-oriented team player.

In terms of my Finance skills, I have taken BUAD 306 and I have served as the Student Body Treasurer in middle school.  I was in charge or overseeing the budget of the Leadership committee and the various expenses of other departments (i.e. food store on campus).  I like working with numbers and I’m trustworthy with money.  I manage my own expenses very well and I balance my checkbook often.  I’m also a very dependable person with a keen eye for details.

In high school, I was on the Academic Decathlon team and I received the award for the “Most Inspirational Participant”.  I remember initializing the meetings and firing up my teammates when they felt like they couldn’t study anymore.  I remember providing the laughter that sparked some energy back into them.  I remember setting up additional meetings outside school and dedicating some weekends to study just so to make sure the whole team was on track.  I remember having to memorize every little detail of Mozart’s die Zauberflote opera.  Most importantly, I remember the feeling of accomplishment when the award was presented to me and I dedicated the award to my team.  I feel that I can apply the same qualities to contribute to the ISA team dynamic.

VP of MARKETING

Mike Dewitt

Bio :
I am a junior at USC majoring in Business with an emphasis in Information Systems.  I am a native San Diegan, and come from a family of six kids. This is my first semester as a member of ISA.

The Challenge:
The primary challenge that any VP of Marketing will face is to come up with an effective marketing mix that will appeal to all of USC students.  The job as VP of Marketing would be a lot easier if one only had to market to Business majors.  This, however, is not the case.  Because we are a club that is open to all USC students we have an enormous pool of potential members, and we need to get their attention.  I feel that ISA is currently under-exposed, and is not well marketed to all USC students.  Many USC students simply do not know about ISA, or what we do.  It was only this year that I myself discovered ISA accidentally through a search of a USC’s clubs webpage.  I am almost certain that I would have joined ISA a lot earlier had I known about it.  Clearly this is due to ineffective marketing.  People can not join a club if they don’t know it exists.

  The Solution:
I will effectively meet this challenge by creating a market scheme that will encompass a great majority of the students at USC.  From what I have seen this semester, I feel that ISA currently does not market to many potential members.  As I stated above, I feel that it is very important that we market to all USC students with an interest in Information Technology due to the fact that ISA is open to all USC students.

Primarily I feel that ISA is missing out on many potential younger members.  Generally, freshman and sophomores are not absolutely sure what major they want to pursue, and ISA could be an effective way of helping them determine if Business/IS is for them.  However, I feel that our club does not currently market to these individuals, and thus they are unaware of our club and its potential benefits to them. If elected VP of Marketing I will develop a marketing scheme that will target freshman and sophomores who are unsure about their major or career path.

However, I do understand that Business students are the primary target for the club, and as part of my marketing plan I will expand the coverage of ISA’s current marketing strategy so as to make sure that all of the business students know that our club exists and what we can provide them.  As part of my marketing plan I will look to the help of professors to spread the word about the club through announcements in their classes.  I will also look to distribute flyers and make personal announcements in all of the major Business classes, as well as the business prerequisite classes.  In addition to these things, I will also continue the posting of flyers around the business school, as well as sending out mass emails.

  Qualifications:
I am a very hard worker, and would be fully dedicated in my role as VP of Marketing if elected.  I work well in groups, and I look forward to helping out any of the other executives when help is needed. I also have a proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, and I feel that through my Photoshop skills I will be able to create effective flyers that will appeal to all of USC students.  I also work well under deadlines, and I try to retain a very flexible schedule so as to be able to work with others at their convenience.

  Conclusion:
If elected as the VP of Marketing, I feel that I will be able to meet and far exceed the demands of the position.  It will be my ultimate goal to increase the membership of ISA.  I will do this by implementing the solutions described above, as well as my use of technological know-how in conjunction with my strong work ethic.  I am willing to devote the time to make this goal a reality.  I am really excited about the possibilities.  I feel that I am the best candidate for the new VP of Marketing for ISA.
