After we sent out our last newsletter, calling for donations for Sichuan, CSSA have received lots of responses. Some members sent us checks and we also heard about many of you donating online.Thank you all for your support and love!
During the commencement on last Friday, USC-CSSA officers had our last event this semester-- to collect contributions in Hahn Plaza in front of Tommy Trojan. We prepared lots of flyers, posters and donation boxes, explaining the disaster happened in China to everyone. Many people showed their sympathy and gladly contributed.
We gratefully announce that up to now, the contributions that USC-CSSA received have added up to more than $2,500 and the number is still increasing.
USC-CSSA is still accepting donations and people in Sichuan still need your help! Please take some time to read the following donation information if you are interested.

**********FACTS OF SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE*********
On 5-12-2008, at Beijing local time 14:28pm, a historically rare
earthquake of 7.8 magnitude devastated southwestern China, killing
close to 12,000 people by far and trapping thousands of others under
schools, factories and houses, while the worst-hit area was still cut
off from rescuers today. Now we are facing a crucial time period of
rescuing those needy people and helping them with disaster relief.
Children are wandering homeless on the street, young people are being
buried by their tearing elder parents with unspeakable sadness.
As of 5/13, 2008 --
# 12,000 people died !
# 1 in ten local Wenchuan people either killed or injured!
# Thousands of students were buried !
# Conservation estimation of recovery takes 10-20 years!
# Millions are camping on the street and in greet need of food!
shelter, medication, and prevention means of infectious diseases after
the catastrophe !
The victims need your help urgently !!!
Each dollar from an individual may not have a big impact. But
together, it can make a GREAT difference!!! Your generosity is highly
appreciated!

亲爱的朋友们，
北京时间2008年5月12日14时28分，距离成都西北面93公里的四川汶川发生了史上罕见的M7.8级地震，重庆、云南、陕西、甘肃等十多个省市自治区有明显震感。短短的几十秒钟却已造成近万人伤亡，不计其数的房屋被毁，数十万人流离失所。然而这场天灾给中国人民的考验才刚刚开始：迅速控制灾区的疫情，清理灾后现场，帮助灾区人民重建家园，我们清醒地预见到前面的路还很长很艰险。
面对刹那间失去双亲的孩子们哭喊着父母的名字，我们的心在滴血。
面对刹那间白发人送黑发人的悲剧，我们的心也在流泪。
面对身先士卒在救灾抢险第一线把深埋在倒塌的建筑物下的人们挖掘拯救出来的中国人民解放军们，我们多么想对这些最可爱的人说声："谢谢您了！"
这一切的一切，我们和受灾同胞感同身受。
历史经验告诉我们，灾难的可怕不仅在于其本身的破坏性，更在于我们是否能够有效地应对， 而此时此刻成千上万灾区同胞需要各方各界及时有效的帮助。
我们，代表所有南加大中国学生学者联谊会执委会成员，向您发出我们诚挚且急切的呼吁：让我们献出无私的爱心、伸出温暖的双手，和全体中国人民一起，团结一致，众志成城，聚沙成塔，集腋成裘，帮助受灾同胞们度过重重难关、重建我们美好的家园！

为表达全国各族人民对四川汶川大地震遇难同胞的深切哀悼，国务院决定，2008年5月19日至21日为全国哀悼日。在此期间，全国和各驻外机构下半旗志哀，停止公共娱乐活动，外交部和我国驻外使领馆设立吊唁簿。5月19日14时28分起，全国人民默哀3分钟，届时汽车、火车、舰船鸣笛，防空警报鸣响。
