History

2002-2003:

-The Troy Tones were founded in October of 2002 by three USC undergrads.

-Their first concert was held in December, under the VKC Arches on campus, and consisted of just four songs and nine members.

-In the spring, the group made its first-time competitive debut at USC’s Absolut A Cappella competition.

-The group’s year-end concert debuted what would become two TT “classics”: “Kiss the Girl” and “I’ll Be There,” the latter eventually turning into a yearly staple featuring the group’s alumni.

2003-2004:

-In the spring, the group competed in USC’s Absolut A Cappella competition and placed 3rd among the competitors, which served as the first big victory for the new, struggling little a cappella group.  This also paved the way for what would become a tradition of adding many humorous performance elements to Troy Tones concerts in the form of costumes and repertoire choices.

2004-2005:

-In the spring, the group held its first “Senior Send-Off” Concert, as it was the first one needed.  In this (now traditional) final year-end concert, the Troy Tones said goodbye to its first three graduating senior members.

2005-2006:

-In January, the Troy Tones competed for the first time ever in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) at UC Berkeley.

-During the Spring semester, the Troy Tones completed the vocals for their first album, Goodnight!, featuring eight recorded tracks, and two live tracks.

-This marked one of the first years where the Troy Tones started to commit regularly to a theme for most of their larger concerts and competitions.  In what has become very common for many TT performances nowadays, the Troy Tones dedicatedly began to dress up with a group motif and put on an entirely themed performance.

-In May, the Troy Tones sent off a group of four talented seniors, who were the last of the group’s original members from 2002.

2006-2007:

-In January, competing for only the second time, the Troy Tones were thrilled to qualify for the Semifinals of the ICCA by placing 2nd in their quarterfinal round at UC Santa Barbara.  The Troy Tones took a road trip to Northern California in March for the competition and continued to make a larger name for themselves.

2007-2008:

-During the fall semester, after what seemed like endless struggles with the post-production process, the group was finally able to release its freshman album effort, Goodnight!.

-For the first time, the Troy Tones were thrilled to host the ICCA quarterfinals at USC’s Bovard Auditorium.

-In the spring, the group made headway onto its second album, and first big-budget studio effort, recording eight of the album’s tracks that semester.

2008-2009:

-Throughout the fall semester, the group worked hard to finish the recording and post-production for their newest album.

-In December the group released its second album, their first big-budget studio effort, Too Soon?

-This year, for the second time, the Troy Tones hosted the ICCA quarterfinals at USC’s Bovard Auditorium.

2009-2010:

-This year, during winter vacation, the spring semester, and the beginning of the summer, the Troy Tones began work toward their goal of recording a new studio album, Out of Control.

-In February, the group competed in USC’s Absolut A Cappella competition, taking home a 2nd Place finish and the special award for Best Arrangement, awarded to Ricky Parra for his work on “(Somewhere) Over the Rainbow.”

-In May, the group sent off its largest senior class to date, with seven graduates moving on.
