The 3rd Annual Mabuhay Festival!

USC TROY PHILIPPINES HOSTS 3RD ANNUAL MABUHAY FESTIVAL, THE ANNUAL BENEFIT CONCERT FOR A PHILIPPINE CHARITY

The 3rd Annual Mabuhay Festival (TMF) hosted by USC Troy Philippines is on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Opened to general public, TMF is Troy Philippines’ annual benefit concert celebrating Filipino-American culture and social awareness of Philippine issues.

Every October, in honor of Filipino-American heritage month, Troy Philippines hosts the Mabuhay Festival to raise funds for a charity in the Philippines. Troy Philippines chooses a different charity organization every year to highlight different social issues. Focusing on self-development and helping the urban poor out of poverty, this year’s charity is Alalay Sa Kaunlaran (ASKI) Inc., a God-centered, model microfinance nonprofit organization. In light of recent events, ASKI Inc has created its own initiative to aid relief of those affected by Typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines.

International media is heavily covering Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana), which has wreaked havoc on the Philippines. At this point, 250 people have been killed, many are still missing and hundreds of thousands have been displaced. The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that Ondoy's total rainfall was 410mm, the worst rainfall the country has seen in 40 years. In order to raise awareness for the relief, USC Troy Philippines is collecting donations through on-campus drop boxes and also at our general meetings as well as the Mabuhay Festival. Our goal is to have our proceeds go through ASKI Inc’s relief fund for those affected by Typhoon Ondoy.

“With the same goal in mind, ASKI and Troy Philippines aim to help Filipinos, both here and in the Philippines, strive for self-development and independence, while bringing social and cultural awareness to the Filipino-American community and beyond,” USC Troy Philippines President, Julia Reyes.

Bringing in upcoming performers from across California, TMF is showcasing over 10 different artists, like YouTube stars Gabe Bondoc and Leejay, hip hop artist Roscoe Umali, Actor/Poet Dante Basco, and R&B sensation Melissa Reyes from the hit reality television show, Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll.

TMF is also featuring acoustic singers Manny Garcia and Mike Isberto, acoustic band HaloHalo Talentado, hip hop band DDL Roundhouse, a cappella groups USC Sirens and The Trojan Men, taiko drummers USC Kazan Taiko and Troy Philippines Dance Troupe and Voices.

Many entrepreneurial vendors are supporting Troy Philippines, including the popular and hip urban clothing company, Pnoy Apparel, who is the main clothing vendor at TMF (http://pnoyapparel.com/). Also, Baybayin artist David Lazaro from the BathalaProject, will have a cultural booth and will display his Baybayin graphic and urban art at this year's festival (http://www.thebathalaproject.com/).

Directions

110 (Harbor Freeway) North
1. Take the Exposition Boulevard exit.
2. Go straight through the 37th Street light. Keep left.
3. Go under the freeway bridge and across Flower Street and Figueroa Street.
4. Turn right into the main entrance to the university at Exposition Boulevard and Pardee Way.

110 (Harbor/Pasadena Freeway) South
1. Take the Exposition Boulevard exit. Keep right.
2. Go across Flower Street and Figueroa Street.
3. Turn right into the main entrance to the university at Exposition Boulevard and Pardee Way.

10 (Santa Monica Freeway) East
1. Take the Hoover Street exit. Turn right at the light.
2. Continue until Hoover Street ends at Jefferson Boulevard. Turn left on Jefferson Boulevard, then turn right on Figueroa Street.
3. Take Figueroa Street to Exposition Boulevard and turn right.
4. Turn right into the main entrance to the university at Exposition Boulevard and Pardee Way.

10 (Santa Monica Freeway) West
1. Take the Hoover Street exit. Turn right at the light.
2. Continue until Hoover Street ends at Jefferson Boulevard. Turn left on Jefferson Boulevard, then turn right on Figueroa Street.
3. Take Figueroa Street to Exposition Boulevard and turn right.
4. Turn right into the main entrance to the university at Exposition Boulevard and Pardee Way.

405 (San Diego Freeway) South or North
1. Transition to the 10 (Santa Monica Freeway) east heading toward Los Angeles.
2. Take the Hoover Street exit. Turn right at the light.

4. Take Figueroa Street to Exposition Boulevard and turn right.

Note: An alternate route if you are north of downtown and driving south on the 5: Exit directly to the 110 south and take it through the downtown area to Exposition Boulevard which is just south of downtown.
