Committee Descriptions
The 18th Annual Pilipino American Culture Night (PACN)
Held every spring, the majority of Troy Phi general members would agree that this event is the biggest highlight of the year for Troy Philippines. An exploration of Pilipino Culture and what it means to be a Pilipino American through dancing, singing and acting, general members contribute to the creation of a successful show. For new members, this can be a great way to get to know your fellow Troy Phi members. New friendships are formed, while old friendships are strengthened through the many practices and rehearsals held throughout the spring semester. Don’t know how to get involved in such a massive production? Take a look at the following descriptions of all the PACN committees to learn about the various ways to get involved. For general questions feel free to contact our PACN Coordinator Lauren Macaraeg (lauren@troyphi.com).
Skit
Love to act? Then participating in the PACN skit would be a great way to work on your acting skills, or maybe just try something new. The skit provides the foundation for a comprehensive progression of the show, providing direct insight on Filipino daily life including the typical mannerisms that many come to humorously characterize Filipinos. For more information, contact our PACN Skit Coordinator [?????].
Music
Perhaps you are a musically inclined person. Join Troy Phi Voices (TPV), Troy Philippines’ singing group, and the main facilitator of the musical aspect of PACN! This year’s PACN is anticipated to be a musical sure to entertain audiences. For more information about TPV, contact Alex Woog (alex@troyphi.com).
Dance
No PACN experience is complete without performing a Filipino cultural dance. With various dance suites, each suite of dances capture the character, culture, and history of the areas in the Philippines where the dances originate. While the majority of cultural dances change every year, expect to see such signature dances as Singkil and Tinikling to be performed at yearly. The Modern suite also provides members to perform hip hop dance routines choreographed by Troy Phi members. For more information about the dances to be featured for our 2010 production, contact our PACN Dance Coordinator [I think I heard Lauren say it’s Julia…but I’m not sure].
Crew
Perhaps instead you prefer working behind the scenes rather than on-stage. Crew members are the backbone to the execution of a successful show. They set the show by creating backdrops and handling props that include furniture for the skit portion of the show.
Props
Have a knack for art? From creating head-wreaths to necklaces, utilize your creative talent in creating props that serve as accessories to accompany the various costumes used in the show.
Community Service
What constitutes the foundation of USC Troy Philippines is the unique Filipino culture. Not only does the executive board strive to educate general members about the history of the Philippines and the major issues that face Filipino-Americans today, Troy Philippines makes great efforts to reach out to the local Filipino-American community in Los Angeles. With our contacts to organizations including the Filipino American Library (FAL) and the Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), Troy Philippines participates in numerous community service projects. Last year members participated in a community clean-up of Historic Filipinotown in Los Angeles that featured special guest boxer champion Manny Pacquiao. For more information about community service opportunities this school year, please contact our Community /Culture Chair Mike Garrido (mike@troyphi.com).
The 3rd Annual Mabuhay Festival (TMF)
October is Filipino-American History Month, and what better way to kick-off the month with a festival! Taking place on October 10, 2009, The Mabuhay Festival is sure to provide outlets of fun for the whole family, as Troy Philippines takes over McCarthy Quad for the big event. Eat traditional Filipino food, play games, our purchase merchandise from various vendors. Our festival concert showcases Filipino-American artists; last year’s ranged from the musicians such as the GLP Trio (Gabe Bondoc, Leejay Abucayan, and Passion), dance troupes from the Los Angeles area, and our very own Troy Phi voices. All revenue generated from The Mabuhay Festival will be donated to benefit schoolchildren in the Philippines.
Contact the following for information about the different committees in TMF:

The Troy Philippines Youth Conference (TPYC)
First established last Spring, the Troy Philippines Youth Conference brings together Filipino-American high school students from all over the Los Angeles area to the USC campus for this day-long event. With a successful turnout in the first TPYC, there are plans for two conferences this year, one each semester. Getting in to USC is a difficult process, and paying for a high-quality education is even harder. This event gives the opportunity for Troy Philippines members to share their insights and advice to prospective students on the college application process. Students are taken on campus tours and participate in various workshops and seminars that include topics such as financial aid, student life, and tips on submitting an impressive application. For more information about TPYC and the Mentorship Program, contact our Programming Director Kristine Cotangco (kristine@troyphi.com).
Public Relations (PR)
USC Troy Philippines was voted “Best Cultural Organization” for the 2nd year in a row at the annual Tommy Awards. From our fun general meetings and after-events, high-profile events such as The Mabuhay Festival and Pilipino American Culture Night, to our consistent outreach to the Filipino American community, there is no doubt Troy Philippines deserved this honor. If you have ideas or suggestions in making our presence further known, contact our PR Directors Melissa Sipin and Alex Woog (pr@troyphi.com).
