Founded
in 2001 by four Taekwondo-loving students, USC Taekwondo is now the
largest martial arts organization on campus.
USC
Taekwondo (TKD) is a diverse club whose members range from complete
beginners to seasoned black belts. The club has 2 coaches and numerous
experienced black belt instructors and offers both Olympic and
Traditional classes. Olympic classes teach the Olympic sport version of
Taekwondo and prepare students for sparring competition. Traditional
classes focus more on Taekwondo as a martial art and teach forms, self
defense and proper kicking and punching techniques. The club has a
Tournament Team, comprised of elite athletes who
represent USC in collegiate tournaments, and a Demo Team which does a lot
of performances
throughout the year. USC TKD is a member of the NCTA (National
Collegiate Taekwondo Association), the Pacific-West Taekwondo
Conference (Pac-West),
and the US national governing body of Taekwondo, USA Taekwondo (USAT).
USC
Taekwondo is open to USC students, faculty, and alumni. Registered
members can attend traditional-style classes to learn Taekwondo
philosophy and techniques. Those who have already learned the basics can
also attend Olympic-style sparring classes. Members also have the
opportunity to share Taekwondo with others in the community through
activities such as demonstrations and USCTOP.
As part
of the University of Southern California Recreational Sports Club program,
USC Taekwondo represents the university in sparring and poomsae (forms)
competitions.
As a
martial arts sports club, USC TKD competes in collegiate and open
tournaments in California and around the country. Tournament team members
are selected based on level of commitment, regular attendance at sparring
classes, and other factors at the discretion of our two team coaches: Clayton Barber and Spyro
Spyropoulos-Spears.
