CONSTITUTION
- The official name for this organization is the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages/Teaching English as a Foreign Language Society.
- This organization will use the name or its acronym, the TESOL/TEFL Society, in all publicity materials and correspondence.
The purposes of this organization are:
- To promote social and intellectual interaction and intercultural exchange among students and faculty interested in the Teaching English to the Speakers of Other Languages and Teaching of English as a Second or Foreign Language;
- To share and disseminate information about common academic and professional interests
- To serve as a student-based point of contact for members and nonmembers alike regarding matters pertaining to TESOL and its purview.
- All currently enrolled TESOL/TEFL majors are eligible to be members. No membership fee.
- All members are required to demonstrate support for the purpose of this organization.
- Membership decisions will not discriminate on the basis of age, race, religion or creed, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, or sexual orientation.

- The President is responsible for directing and overseeing the organization of the Society, for maintaining an overview of all of its activities and officers' activities, for overseeing the meetings of the Society, and for final approval of all official documents.
- The Vice President shall assist and advise the President in his or her responsibilities as indicated above, stand in for the President in his or her absence, as well as serve to coordinate various Society activities and organizational actions.
- The Secretary/Treasurer is primarily responsible for scheduling meetings, events and use of facilities with the University-Student Union, though all officers should assist in ensuring the completion of the paperwork required by the university.
- Treasurer is responsible for recording the minutes of the Society's meetings and filing the minutes with the USC Student Organization. The Secretary/Treasurer is also responsible for collecting membership dues, for maintaining the Society's account with the [BANK NAME], and for maintaining a roster of active members. The Secretary/Treasurer may also serve to organize or maintain an overview of the Society's fund-raising activities and assist the president and vice president with applications for funding from USC Student Organization.
- All officers and candidates for office must be currently enrolled US students.
- All officers must be voting members of the TESOL/TEFL society except Social Program director and Web Master.
- Any members may nominate any other member, including himself or herself.
- Elections will be held at the second -to-last meeting of each semester. In the Society's first year of existence, which commences in January, 2005, officers shall begin serving at that time and serve until December, 2005 should they remain enrolled as students at USC. Thereafter, elections will take place at the end of each semester.
- Nominations may also be made during the election meeting itself, prior to closing of nominations and taking the vote.
- A simple majority vote of the quorum present at that meeting will be sufficient to elect an officer. If there are more than two candidates and no candidate receives a majority, there will be a run-off vote between the top two vote recipients in the general meeting.
- Officers may be removed from office for failure to perform duties or for violation of membership clause.
- Officers to be voted upon in this regard will be notified of the intention to do so in writing at least one week prior to the meeting at which the vote will be taken.
- A two-thirds majority of quorum present at a regularly scheduled meeting shall be sufficient for removal form office.
- The term of office shall be from the last meeting of each spring semester until the end of the second-to-last meeting of the subsequent spring semester.
- During the vocation, the Vice President will assume the duties of the President, the Secretary/Treasurer will assume the duties of the Vice President, and the Program Chair will assume the duties o the Secretary/Treasurer should those offices be vacant.
- Regular meetings will be held the first and third Friday of every month. Special meetings may be called by any combination of three of the officers. Notice of special meetings must be communicated to all members at least 72 hours in advance of the meeting.
- By-laws can be added to this constitution by a simple majority vote of the entire membership at a regular meeting of the TESOL/TEFL Society.
This constitution takes precedence over any and all by-laws.
- This constitution can be amended by a two-thirds vote of the entire membership at a regular meeting of the TESOL/TEFL Society.
