Jakarta, Jakarta!
Thursday, 19 Oct 2006
Since Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia, the city offers a variety of food from different parts of the nation. And since Indonesia is made up of about 18,000 islands, that's a LOT of food--some good, some bad, and some just plain weird by my standard. In addition, most Indonesian food are deeply influenced by other cultures, like Chinese, Dutch, and Arabian, because of our rich history and the diversity of immigrants.
Jakarta's traditional food is one of my personal favorites. "Nasi Uduk" is rice cooked in coconut milk, and served with fried chicken, mashed potato fritters, and vegetables. "Soto Betawi" is a rich and savory beef soup with coconut milk and usually eaten with rice.
You've probably noticed that we eat a lot of rice, in fact, we eat everything with rice (which means no low-carb diet for most). Some Indonesian restaurants also offer rijstafel, which is a Dutch adaptation of buffet-style meal fit for a king, consisting of various dishes, from rice, to meat, to vegetables, and of course the all important chilli sauce.
Delicious!

How to Cure a Homesick...
Friday, 20 Oct 2006This is a little out of point, but I'm very proud of my sister! Not only because she's the most adorable thing alive, but also because at only 12, her websites are very impressive! I don't recall being THAT creative when I was 12.
