Women Spotlight: BAE Systems DirectorWhat: BAE Director Meet and Mingle Thena Fantasia, Director of C3I Performance Excellence will be sharing her experience and insights as a woman Director for BAE Systems and how she made the transition from engineer to manager all while balancing a family. Thena received her BS in Mechanical Engineering from Temple University and her MBA from San Diego State University. She has worked at BAE Systems for the last 20 years holding such positions as Mechanical Engineer, Engineering Section Head, Engineering Manager, Program Manager, and Director. SWE Fall Retreat to Speed ZoneDate: Friday, November 30th, 2007 Come join SWE for a fun filled evening of car racing, mini golf, arcade games, and pizza! Executive Board: * President: Oversees all SWE operations including conducting board meetings, general meetings with committee members, etc. Manages relations between SWE-USC and SWE Region B and SWE Nationals. Must have held previous SWE officer position. * VP of Corporate Affairs: Serves as the liaison to the corporate world, educating members about the job market, and introducing them to job/internship opportunities.Oversees, lead meetings with Corporate Affairs Committee and events that include Evening with Industry, Afternoon with Industry, etc. * VP of Community Affairs: Acts as liaison to SWE national and to the community through philanthropy outreach events. Oversees, lead meetings with Community Affairs Committee and events that include Halloween Fun Fair, Girl Scout Badge Day, etc. * VP of Student Affairs: Publicizes and promotes student programming events to current and non members. Oversees, lead meetings with Student Affairs Committee and events that include Charm School, Date Auction, General Meetings, etc. * Secretary: As an organizer of information from all meetings and events, and ensures that members, officers, and advisors have access to this information. Manages list serve and sends weekly newsletter. * Treasurer: Manages SWE bank account, membership database and obtain funding through Viterbi and USG for events. * Historian: Record keeper of all events. Takes pictures and writes post event summary. * Webmistress: Maintains and updates website. * Women Student Assembly (WSA) Liaison: Represents SWE in the umbrella organization of WSA. WSA is a campus-wide assembly that is open to all groups and individuals interested in the support of gender equality.
Committees: * Corporate Affairs Committee (2 positions): Responsible for hands-on involvement with getting funding, planning and executing corporate-related events with the VP of Corporate Affairs. Events include: Evening with Industry, Afternoon With Industry, Corporate meetings, CED Corporate Luncheon and much more! * Community Affairs Committee (3 positions): Responsible for hands-on involvement with getting funding, planning and executing outreach-related events with the VP of Community Affairs. Events include: Halloween Fun Fair, beach clean ups, Try It Riot, Girl Scout Badge Day, teen shelter volunteering, can food drive and much more! * Student Affairs Committee (3 positions): Responsible hands-on involvement with getting funding, planning and executing student-related events with the VP of Student Affairs Events include: General meetings, Charm School, Date Auction, Big/Lil Sib Program, ice cream socials and much more!

Relay for Life is a 24-hour event benefiting the American Cancer Society. Teams send a member to walk or run around a track, relay-style, for 24 hours. Our first lunch of the 2008-2009 year is with Professor Urbashi Mitra, an important part of the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering. She was awarded her PhD in 1994 from Princeton and is currently working on multi-user spread-spectrum systems, space-time coding, communication theory, wireless resource allocation, ultra wideband communications, and sensor networks at USC. Call for Assistant Webmistress for Spring 2010We're currently looking for someone to assume the role of assistant webmistress in the spring semester. You will be responsible for working with the webmistress to update the website, make event graphics, and other web/print related content. We are looking for someone who wants to segue into the webmistress role for Fall 2010 and assume an important leadership role in SWE-USC. Because the SWE-USC website receives a lot of traffic, you must have the skills and be able to appropriate the time necessary to get updated content up as soon as possible. We are looking for candidates that have a solid background in HTML and CSS coding, graphic design using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and/or other web design software/coding (all majors welcome!). If you are interested, please e-mail sweusc@usc.edu indicating your interest, in addition to a portfolio of your design work (preferably at least one design from Photoshop and one from Illustrator) as well as a current link to a website you designed yourself. If you do not have one or more of these portfolio components, just let us know. Candidates will likely do an informal interview with the current webmistress in January to provide a better picture of their web design experience.

Engineering Date AuctionDate: Thursday, February 18th, 2010In accordance with the upcoming Viterbi Ball on February 19th, Society of Women Engineers is hosting the 6th Annual Viterbi Date Auction to raise money for Aviva. Aviva is a non-profit organization that provides various programs to help at-risk, emotionally distressed, abused, and neglected youth (and often their families). Our 2010 auctionees are the most stunning, talented bunch yet, so come and bid your hearts out. Not only will it be an entertaining night, but it's all for charity. Iridescent Family Night--Call for VolunteersDate for Training: Wednesday March 24th, 2010Want to help inspire girls and their mothers? This year SWE and ASBME are teaming up to volunteer with Iridescent, doing four two-hour sessions on Wednesdays from 5:30-8pm with young girls and their mothers. These sessions will be geared toward exposing the girls to math, science and engineering while having them bond with their mothers. Sessions will be at the near by Palms Elementary School and will start on April 7th. You can volunteer for one or more (or all 4!) sessions but all volunteersmust attend the training session on Wed, March 24 from 7:30-9pm to able to volunteer in April. Girl Scout Badge DayDate: Saturday, March 27th, 2010Come out and inspire 4-6th grade junior girl scouts! The Society of Women Engineers will be putting on a full day of workshops geared toward exposing girls to math, science and engineering. This event will take place on Saturday March 27th from 10-3 on the USC campus (Volunteers will be required to check in at 9 am). You can volunteer for the entire day or simply part of the day. Volunteer positions include leading the troops around campus or leading one of the workshops. Workshops include, discovering polymers, CAD design, lab tours, acids vs bases and more!
