Surgical Student Interest Group (SSIG): Curriculum
 

 

   
     

 
SSIG's Curriculum for Interaction with the Dept. of Surgery includes 7 sessions in the first and second year of medical school. All sessions are carried out in association with the Department of Surgery and the Surgical Skills Center, providing hands on experience to all who participate. Students can return to the Surgical Skills Center on their own time to practice the skills they have just learned.

Scrubbing, Gloving, and Instrumentation Students learn the basics of scrubbing into the OR, sterile technique and the names of some basic surgical tools.

Knott Tie & Suture I Students learn the basics of the surgeon's knot and practice on various tissues.

Electrocautery Students learn safety and basic operation of this important surgical tool.

Laporoscopy I Students learn how to operate various pieces of equipment including cameras and graspers.

Suturing II Students review the basics and move on to more complex suturing techniques.

Laparoscopy II Students learn more advanced laparoscopic techniques including laparoscopic knot tying.
7 Bowel Anastamosis Students integrate their skills in order to perform a mock bowel anastamosis surgery.
  Open to all years  
Residents Panel Current residents share their thoughts and lessons learned by going through the process themselves.
Attending Panel Attending Surgeons share what life is like on a day to day basis. Students can see the end of the journey, and ask questions of these successful individuals.
