committees
As
for any event and organization, help is always need with its planning and
execution. Spirits in Action begins meeting weekly
each year in early September to help plan the event for the following spring.
Each week, we meet to discuss planning, funding, publicity, and organization
of the upcoming event. Spirits in Action's Planning Committee is broken down into several
committees, for which there are appointed chairpersons and voluntary
committee members. This year the committees include:
Funding: In charge of donations and solicitations of all moneys. While
the entire Executive Board helps to solicit funding, the Funding board
coordinates that effort by assigning targeted corporations and individuals,
overseeing follow-ups, and organizing money coming in and its allotment. This
committee provides good experience in presentations and donation
solicitation, doing most of its work in the fall semester.
Athlete Recruitment: Solicits area schools for participation in the event,
coordinating with coaches and teachers, and later organizing
"heats" that the athletes are put into for competition. This
committee gets to work very closely with the athletes and their coaches,
teachers and schools.
Food: Organizes the food portion of donations for the event. Since
this is the major part of our donations needed, the committee is busy during
the fall with soliciting for the actual donations, and then in the spring
with the coordination of those donations for the day-of.
Volunteer Recruitment: Solicits and coordinates volunteers for the event. As most of
our volunteers come from the USC student community, this involves working
closely with student organizations and the students themselves. Later, in the
spring, it also involves the coordination of volunteer information sessions
and pairing volunteers with buddies for the event.
Entertainment: Solicits celebrity volunteers and donations for the event in
the fall semester and then assembles and sends out press kits/releases to all
applicable media sources in the spring. The committee is also responsible for
coordinating entertainment acts throughout the day. This committee involves
direct contact with media and celebrities, and gives experience in public and
press relations.
Spirit City: Solicits organizations to put up booths in Spirit City
(our carnival) and run them the day of the event. Most of the booths are
sponsored by student organizations and sororities and fraternities, thus
providing numerous contacts and presentation opportunities. To sponsor a
booth in Spirit
City , please fill out
the contact form.
Donations: Solicits monetary or prize donations to use as raffles,
carnival game prizes, or food. The committee outreaches to as many as 40
companies each year and receives a variety of responses from 500 bagels to
theme park passes or theatre tickets.
