Students mentored
As a graduate student in the Capone lab, and now postoc in the Webb lab, I had the opportunity to mentor a number of women, both high school and undergraduate students, on independent research projects.
- Su Fey Ong, 2003 & 2004, high school student at the California Academy of Math and Science. Su Fey represented the Southern California Academy of Sciences at the annual national meeting of the American Junior Academy of Science (AJAS) in both 2005 and 2006, and presented the work she carried out on the effects of phosphorus limitation and acidification on nitrogen fixation in Trichodesmium.
- Sarah Foster, 2004, USC Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) participant from Hampshire College. Sarah presented the results of her summer research on nitrogen fixation associated with kelp at the 2005 ASLO Aquatic Sciences and is now working on the San Francisco Bay water quality project at USGS.
- Kelsey Poulson, 2005, USC REU participant from University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Kelsey studied how nitrogen fixation was associated with the decomposition of kelp and recently began her graduate career in the lab of Julia Kubanek at Georgia Tech.
- Carla Steinbring, 2007, USC REU participant from University of Minnesota Morris, co-mentored with Angela Knapp. Carla carried out research on the changes in surface to subsurface dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) concentrations in an effort to understand differences in DOP lability in distant locations.
- Bethanie Edwards, 2008, USC REU participant from Hendrix College. Bethanie carried out two projects while in the Webb lab. The first investigated the production rate and timing of extracellular material in Crocosphaera, which will be developed into a short manuscript. The second compared nifH transcript numbers to nitrogen fixation rates in Trichodesmium and Crocosphaera to see if there is a specific realtionship between the two.
