Bio
Marine science has been an interest of mine for many years. As a high school senior, however, I chose to pursue a degree in general biology at Harvey Mudd College in order to gain a broad knowledge base. My education there was superb, and has provided the base for how I view research. As a junior, I had the chance to explore my interest in marine science through the Marine Biological Laboratory's Semester in Environmental Science. I have been devoted to studying biological oceanography and biogeochemistry ever since.
Research interests
I am interested in the interaction of phytoplankton and biogeochemical cycles. Specifically, my research aims to understand nutrient limitation of carbon and nitrogen fixation and the adaptations phytoplankton employ to deal with this nutrient limitation. Previous work has focused on phosphorus limitation in Trichodesmium and Crocosphaera, while new research will focus on iron limitation in Synechococcus. Ongoing projects include the study of nitrogen fixation in bioturbated sediments (with Vicky Bertics and Wiebke Ziebis) and the lability of DON versus DOP (with Angela Knapp)
