Vice President

Constitutional Description:

  • The Vice president will assume presidential responsibilities in the absence of the President. The Vice president will serve as a liaison to all S.G.A. standing and special committees. The Vice President may appoint and oversee Alumni Relations committee chairman.

Professional/Personal Attributes necessary for the position:

  • Vice President must be responsible, being able to accomplish tasks assigned to him/her in a prompt manner. Because the Vice President must act as backup to essentially all other officers, he/she must have good organizational skills and be able to keep up excellent communication with all other members of the executive board, especially the President. Lastly, the Vice President is responsible for all treasury duties of SGA. As such, accounting or administrational experience is a great asset.

School/Work Schedule needed for the position:

  • The Vice President must be able to attend ALL meetings. In addition, their schedule must allow for up to five or six hours a week for duties that may need to be performed outside of executive board and general meetings.

Responsible for assisting in all events, which include:

  • The Dean’s Luncheon, the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk, and the Annual Alumni Dinner

Position Description:

  • The Vice President is a vital part of the executive board. He/she will work intimately with the President in planning events and meetings. He/she will be the President’s representative if the President is not able to attend an event or meeting. He/she will also be responsible for aiding other officers if assistance is needed. This includes but is not limited to assisting the Alumni Chair with the Alumni Dinner, Assisting Social Chair in the planning of events, writing the Masters Student of the Month article for the monthly newsletter, and helping the Secretary with agenda duties.
  • The Vice President will be in charge of all finances and treasury duties as well. This entails maintaining a sound knowledge of finances and the bank balance of the Student Gerontology Association. Any purchases made by the SGA’s officers must be accounted for and all receipts must be saved. Along with having knowledge of every financial transaction involving the SGA account, all deposits must be posted using the appropriate documents. The President and Vice President will work together throughout the semester to make sure everything is in order with the account balance.
  • Ave # of hours spent per week: 3
  • In the Fall: 3
  • In the Spring: 3-3.5
    • Spring semester is generally a busier semester than Fall semester. The Alumni Dinner, which is arguably SGA’s biggest signature event, occurs in the Spring and thus, all officers must put in a bigger time commitment

What other position(s) does the Vice President work with the most, and why?

  • The President. Both students should be graduate students and thus should be able to communicate easily. The President’s duties are difficult and many, as such, the Vice President must assist so that good leadership is maintained
