My name is Sierra Feliciano and I am currently studying to be a teacher. I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was a young girl because I was inspired by teachers that I liked (and some that I didn't like) to become a wonderful teacher and make a difference in a child's life. When I was in middle school I would try and teach my younger brother Spencer all of the things I was learning in math so that he could be "ahead." Our little game only lasted a week or so, but I was so happy when he got to that grade and came to me one day to show me that he learned what I had taught him three years ago.
I come from a big, loud, and very loving Puerto Rican family. Last Christmas we took a family trip to Fiji for a week. It was an amazing experience and I will never forget it. As the oldest of 5 children I have always been expected to be the "responsible" one and watch out for my brothers. I believe that the "training" I received growing up really helped me develop my love for kids and the desire to take care of them and teach them. My family means a lot to me and I love them all dearly. When I moved away to college the one I missed the most was my youngest brother Stoyan. He is 5 years old now and just started Kindergarten! I miss him so much because he is so young, loving and energetic and is genuinely ecstatic to see me whenever I come home. I am so proud of him because he has already learned how to read and write! This past summer I was a teacher at a summer science camp and I taught Stoyan everything that I was teaching the other students. I never cease to be amazed by his memory and attention span and I hope someday to inspire that kind of dedication from my students.
When I came to USC in the fall of 2004 I joined the sorority Gamma Phi Beta and moved into the house the next year. I currently live in a 5 person room and love every second of it! The picture above is me with all of my roommates, Erica, Kathy, Jameson, and Sarah. I love hanging out with all of them whether we're studying, lazing around watching a movie or going out. I am currently the Rush Chair of Gamma Phi Beta and planned a very successful rush. I am planning on taking further leadership roles in my sorority next year.
I have a great boyfriend named Jason that I have been dating since 6th grade! He and I came to USC together and have now made it to our third year of college. Jason is currently pre-med and plans on becoming a doctor. We love each other very much and hope to get married someday. In the picture above we are out to dinner at La Barca, one of my favorite LA spots! So far I have had many different opportunities to get into classrooms and interact with children. One of my favorite jobs so far was in the summer of 2006 when I was a teacher at a science day-camp. I had my own class and taught a series of science lessons for a week. After that a new set of students would come and I would teach a different set of science lessons. This was a wonderful experience and although it was tiring (more than 40 hours a week) I really enjoyed it. I now work as a USC Reader, mentoring children at Vermont Elementary in Los Angeles and helping them with Math. Somehow, no matter how stressful my day, stepping into a school and sitting down with a student brings me joy and a sense of peace. I look forward to starting Student Teaching and spending more time in the classroom both teaching the students and learning something from them as well.
