Awards Student Scholarships
and Establishes Travel Fund
2005 SoCal Scramble Golf Tournament Summary

The 12th annual SoCal Scramble Golf Tournament was held on June 24, 2005 at Coyote Hills Golf Club in Fullerton, California. This year's tournament was deemed one of the most successful events and raised over $5,000. This brings the total amount raised to over $33,000.

Funds will continue to support the NIRSA Foundation's SoCal Scramble Region VI Scholarship Fund and other Region VI activities including the Region Lead On Conference and state workshops. This year the SoCal Scramble announced the first of three student scholarships for the Region VI Conference awarded to Bert Gonzalez from the University of Southern California. The SoCal Scramble Committee also announced the establishment of a $500 California Student travel fund.

The success and popularity of this event as well as the support for student funding has established the SoCal Scramble as a symbol of success in the field of Recreational Sports. The field included numerous professionals and students from California area colleges and universities as well as a team from ASU. Golf clubs from UCLA, USC, UCSD and CSUF were also represented. The tournament utilized a four person scramble format and included pre-tournament putting, chipping and long drive contests. The Gross Champions of Dan Mahoney, Patrick Mahoney, Ted Kreider and Tim McDonald shot a 16 under par 54. The Net Champions from Precor USA comprised of Dave Elton, Larry Castro, Rob Newkirk and Paul Grierson shot a net 45. One contest highlight was UCLA's Irma Bradley's hole-in-one on the par 3 number 3 with a 7 iron for a Fairmont Acapulco Princess 5 Day/4night golf vacation for two. A large factor in the success of the tournament was due to tremendous support from the sponsors: Frontier Pro Shop, Collegiate Golf Alliance, Advantage Fitness Products, Winzler & Kelly, Lundstrom & Associates, Simovich & Sons Construction, A to Z Glass & Mirror, Sterling Design and the Julie and Cindy Talk Show. Participating tee sponsors included, CAL, UNLV, UCSD, UCLA, USC, OSU, LMU, UCI and Sonoma State. All participants and sponsors are to be commended for participating in an event that will further the growth and quality of recreational programs and student development. I would also like to thank the volunteers that provided the foundation for a successful event: LMU, CSUN, CSUSB, UCSD, UCLA, and USC.
