Evan Schmidt and Will Steuber Capture the USC LQ NCGC Tournament
The USC Trojan Golf Club hosted a local qualifying event for the National Collegiate Golf Championship on Friday October 15, 2004. Seniors Evan Schmidt and Will Steuber shot a team score of 10 under 62 to win the Student Division in the USC NCGC Local Qualifier 2 person scramble event. By winning the Local Qualifier, Steuber and Schmidt will receive round trip air on Southwest Airlines, two nights hotel and the entry package to the National Collegiate Golf Championship held December 3-5, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
There were two critical holes in the tournament that defined the victory for Evan Schmidt and Will Steuber. On the par 4, 290yd 7th hole, Evan hit his tee shot on the top tier or the green. His partner, Will, then drained the 45ft downhill left to right breaking putt. Then on their 17th hole, Will hit his drive just off the green on the short par 4. Evan hit a beautiful chip that nestled up next to the hole ensuring birdie and victory in the qualifier. Schmidt and Steuber will try to help USC defend the Team title as Charles Ralston and Trevor Ozawa from University of Southern California won last years National Title.
Three teams Qualify for Nationals in Las Vegas
The father/son duo of Stephen Miller and Michael Miller took the Open Division title, and tied the overall Tournament Championship honors with a low team score of 62. The Millers earned their entry into the National Championship as winners of the Local Qualifier, and were impressive with their performance. Michael Asher and Al Valervi from Delta Chi Won the Fraternity Division and also earned an invite to Vegas. Edward Orlowski and Dan Vitullo represented UCI and finished third with a 63 in the Open Division to secure the last invite.
