Fall 2006 Semester Rites of Sisterhood
Schedule By: October 7th: This will be our first official
session and will serve as an introduction both to the program’s structure and
purpose, and also to each other. We will
play games and do activities geared towards respecting individualism, while
creating a cohesive group—ROS 2006-2007. October 14th: Today’s
workshop will be centered around ROS’s first principle of self-discovery. We
will also stress the importance of self-definition. We will explore how we define ourselves,
where these definitions come from and how they can change. Do others define us? Or do we define ourselves? What power do we have in deciding who we
are and where we are going? A strong
sense of self is critically important in today’s world where we receive
conflicting messages of who are supposed to be. Culture, media, peers and
many other sources offer their suggestions, but today we will gain the tools
to evaluate all of these sources and decide for ourselves …who am I? October 21st: Today we will test our own ideas
of strength both physically and mentally in a fun-filled day of USC’s own
Ropes Course Challenge.
Self-determination, ROS’ second principle will be the focus of today. How do react when faced with
challenges? What does this say about
who we are? What challenges do face in
our own lives and how do we react to them?
We will use the ropes course as a platform to both identify major
problems in our lives, and also develop real-world solutions. October 28th: Today will focus on the third
ROS tenant of self-responsibility. We
are all blessed in some ways and thus have a responsibility to others. We must give back. How give back may differ depending on our
interest. Today will be a day of
community service. We will spend the
day putting ourselves in the shoes of others and hopefully make a
contribution to their lives. In doing
so, we help bring meaning and value to our own lives—the benefits are
two-fold. November 4th: NO SESSION November 11th: Today will be about the future,
our vision, our goals. We will talk
about goal setting; short term and long term.
The importance of having foresight and staying focused. We will also create goals for the ROS class
of 2006-2007 end of the year field trip and design measures to help us
accomplish this ambitious goal. November 18th: We will spend today talking
about making healthy choices. There
are many external pressures to engage in drug and alcohol use, sexual
activity and participate in activities that are not to the benefit of the
same futures we laid out for ourselves in sessions prior. With such high goals laid out for ourselves
we will carefully examine how these goals for the future can be impacted by
the lifestyle we choose to live today-- either to our benefit or to our
detriment. We will talk about these
issues and how to make decisions that keep us safe, healthy and have our
positive futures in mind. December 2nd: Today will be a fun day of an
introduction to yoga. Come dressed in
gym clothes and with an open mind. We
will be learning some basic yoga positions and the health benefits of
practicing yoga. |
