PSIG is an organization for students interested in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Our group got started in the fall of 2005 and quickly became involved campus-wide. We are connected with many plastic surgery physicians at LA County Hospital and at USC's University Hospital where our members have the opportunity to shadow surgeons Monday through Thursday. We have had speakers such as Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Linda Li and local plastics residents come to talk with the group. This past year, we put on a charity denim sale featuring brand new designer jeans, which we plan to continue as an annual event. We are also hoping to put on a formal art auction in the fall, featuring artists from around the school and community. The organization we work closely with, Operation Smile, has a big charity gala each year, and our group will help sell tickets to it. Our members will have the opportunity to attend this fantastic event as well. The proceeds from all of our fundraising go to Operation Smile, an organization that travels around the world to repair cleft lip and cleft palate craniofacial deformities. Check them out at www.operationsmile.org.
We are looking for two first year representatives who will head up recruitment and fundraising for PSIG. These individuals should be highly motivated to help run such a new group, and they should have a true interest in plastic surgery. At the end of the first year, these two students will also be given the opportunity to go on an Operation Smile mission during the summer. This is an amazing prospect for all those looking to serve an incredible cause, to learn a great deal about plastics, and to meet others in the field. Even if you are not interested in a leadership position this year, we would love to have as many first-years join PSIG as possible. If you are not sure if you are specifically interested in plastic and reconstructive surgery, it would still be beneficial to check our group out. Your involvement in PSIG would give you wonderful opportunities to observe fascinating surgeries and procedures and to gain valuable experience interacting with local surgeons.
