history
The USC chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (USC PRSSA) benefits from a long history. Formed on April 4, 1968, the organization was one of the nine original charter chapters recognized by the Public Relations Society of America's (PRSA) executive board. Originally directed by PRSA, the nine original chapters soon wanted a more authoritative voice in their own governing process. Leading this initiative was Joan-Patricia O'Connor, a USC graduate student, and as a result of her efforts, PRSSA was granted approval to form its own executive board at the 1973 National Conference in Honolulu. Not surprisingly, Joan O'Connor was also appointed to be the first president of PRSSA three days later during the first national election of student officers. Since then, USC PRSSA has continued this trend of excellence. One recent achievement includes winning the Teahan Award for its regional activity, Tinseltown PR, a one-day event focused on entertainment public relations which featured an appearance by Tom Arnold. In the end, USC PRSSA draws from an extensive past filled with notable achievements and personalities. And, as the organization looks toward the future, it continues to strive to uphold this legacy and honor its history.
