History of the Posse
How We Started
The "Ping Pong Posse" started out as a dream for USC senior Adam Bobrow, who wanted little more than a means to
share his love of the sport of table tennis with others. Adam teamed up with Sophomore, Angad Singh to create the
Posse. No one on the University Park campus could foresee this dream coming to life, or rather just how much of an
impact it would have on the USC community when it came true. To the surprise of an international student body (and
to the delight of Adam), the popularity of this new table-tennis club exploded in a matter of days after its
creation. Since its founding in the fall of 2002, the Ping Pong Posse (more commonly referred to as "The Posse")
has drawn a membership of over three-hundred people, all of whom share a common interest in playing and promoting
the sport of table tennis.
Since then, the Ping Pong Posse has come a long way with the leadership of subsequent Presidents Jason Sun,
Hugh Nguyen, Jordan Fisher, James Batton and Charles Hu. The club has grown from the cramped hallways of the Lyon Center
and two rickety tables to a full-sized gym, ten tournament quality tables, nationally ranked Men's and Women's teams,
guest appearances in major blockbuster movies and full sponsorships from renowned table tennis and media companies.
What We Do
The Ping Pong Posse provides tournament-quality tables and equipment for our members to play with, as well as
the venue for all players of all skill levels, from the freshest beginner to the most seasoned
competitors. Since we cater to all skill levels, don't be shy if you think you are not good.
But if you do think you're good, try out for our nationally competitive men's or women's teams.
Current Officers
Charles Hu - President
Charles Hu aka the Prince of Shanghai has been playing ping pong on and off his whole life but has never
been competitive until he joined Posse. He can now beat most 12 year old girls despite being unable to do
underspins to save his life. Besides using rubber and hitting tiny balls, Charles enjoys meeting new people
and bringing everyone together at Posse events for some TLC. He is extremely excited for the new semester
and chance to dominate the competition, again. Other than Posse, Charles does Dragonboat paddling and
nonprofit consulting on the side.
Mond Guo - Vice President
Mond has been with the Posse since 2008. As a member of the class of 2012, Mond enjoys beatboxing and physics outside
of ponging. He's a pen-holder hailing from Montreal, Canada and has been rumored to have touched Celine Dion. With
a fast-attacking style and a mean bass/snare combo, you can catch Mond at Posse social events or at practice every week.
Amitabha Gosh - Secretary
Amitabha (better known as Amit) is a Ph.D. student majoring in Electrical Engineering. He started playing
recreational table tennis at a very early age, but played seriously during his 4 years of undergrad back in
India. He represented his college and the companies that he worked for at various corporate level
tournaments. He started playing in Posse since Fall 2005 and has been a very enthusiastic member ever since. He is a member of the USC varsity team and has represented Posse at various state and national level tournaments.
Besides table tennis, he sketches potraits, plays music (an indian instrument called tabla) and does photography.
Akhilesh Kajaria - Treasurer
Akhilesh is a an undergrad business major. He started playing table tennis at a very early age and has competed in
various levels. He has represented his school and college. He has been a member of Posse since his first semester at
USC and has been on the team since. Akhilesh has also represented Posse at various levels.
Kerrington Fier - Social Chair
Have no Fier, Kerrington is here. Kerrington joined the posse as a true freshman at USC and now serves as the social
chair planning outtings, dinners, socials and parties for the posse people. Not only does he pong it up at the table
tennis court, but also plays a mean beer pong game.
Kristie Kam - Art Designer
Kristie designed all the posse logos, shirts, collectibles and website pictures for the 2009-2010 season.
Past Presidents and Notable Alumni
Adam Bobrow - Founder
Adam was born and raised in southern California. Coming from a background of baseball, basketball and soccer, Adam
started getting into table tennis as a competitive sport at 15 when he played for Team Los Angeles in the Maccabi
games in 1996. Since then he has only continued to improve and is one of only a few people in the country who is
known far and wide as a successful lobber. He started The Ping Pong Posse in his senior year at USC and gave it a
strong start. He remembers the days when he had to ask friends on the USC football team to borrow their track suits
for USC's table tennis team and ask for sponsorship from the school to send our team to the regionals and the
nationals. He still comes back regularly to practice with The Posse and see his friends.
Adam graduated in May of '03 with a BA in Theatre and is currently making a living as an actor. Adam loves almost
all sports, socializing, dancing, music of all types, and learning about other people's cultures. If you ever want
to talk to him about anything, please do. He will be happy to talk with you.
Jimmy Batton - President (2008)
You might say James's ping pong skills are borderline crap... borderline AMAZING. He got his start playing street
pong in the back alleys of El Segundo, CA and since has ascended his way through the multitude of the meek to find
himself a spot on the USC JV team. He would like to seize this opportunity to improve his playing ability and with
enough training, hard work, and canned spinach, he might become the player he has always pretended to be.
James is really a swell guy and also enjoys baseball, movies, and Hot Pockets.
Jordan Fisher - President (2007)
Jordan Fisher is entering his senior year as a computer science major. With no table tennis experience before coming
to USC, he is a true product of the Ping Pong Posse. Jordan is a very enthusiastic member of this club and will do
anything to see this club get bigger and better.
Jordan has won numerous awards and trophies for winning various events and was one of the fastest improvers of
the Posse.
Jordan currently works for JP Morgan in Tokyo.
Jason Sun - President (2003-2006)
As far as hardcore players go, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone as into table tennis as Jason Sun. Jason was a
business major and pre-med with a natural sciences minor. He now works as a project and operations manager at
Veritas Prep and runs a real-estate investment and peer-lending business part-time. He, along with Hugh Nguyen, was a
founding member of what's now USC's most infamous intramural club. Since the very beginning of the Posse's existence,
Jason helped to guide its growth. One of the Posse's first tables was bought with money out of Jason's own pocket!
Very much a generalist, Jason was in charge of just about everything that's not covered by the rest of the Posse's
leadership.
Jason was a medal-winning member of the Posse's first competitive squad, which dominated the ACUI Western Regional
championships. He has played in innumerable other tournaments across the nation and just recently returned from a
table tennis training camp in China. He was a figurehead in the Southern California table tennis community and a
former Southern California Division Director of the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) from
2003-2007. His coaching ability isn't bad either - among his students were two of the four members of the Posse's
leadership!
A lot of great things happened under Jason's leadership. There was the creation of the USC Men's and Women's teams
which consistently place in the top echelons of college table tennis. He was partially responsible for the signing of
a sponsorship with Killerspin. Finally, Jason has secured a professional line of tables and equipment that will last
for many years to come. Nothing would make Jason happier than to see subsequent generations of club leadership take
the Posse to new heights of success. Maybe a scholarship program or even 1st place national title!
Chloe Nguyen- Ping Pong Princess
Five words: smoking hot ping pong player. Right-handed shakehand attacker.
Chloe studied business at USC. As the secretary and event director she recorded all meeting minutes, organized trips
to tournaments and planned social events. She was also the webmaster of USC's Dragon Boat Team. Other activities
include solving the rubik's cube, reciting the Nations of the World and trying to convince Jason that she would make
a great USC Table Tennis cheerleader.
Favorite sport: Table Tennis. Favorite food: ice cream. Curses to her intolerancy towards lactose. Favorite shapes:
stars and hearts. Favorite animals: ducks and penguins.
