Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I become a member?

In order to join Nuestra Alma Latina, undergraduate students must experience one semester as a perspective by attending weekly general body meetings, monthly dinners, and NAL events. Membership requires a commitment of time, service, and a financial obligation.

What is a perspective?

“Perspective” NAL members are given an opportunity to experience and become involved in NAL. At least one semester, either Fall or Spring, is required of perspective members before they can choose to become a member of NAL. Perspectives are exempt from all membership fees.

What are the hour requirements?

All NAL members and perspectives are required to attend weekly general body meetings and monthly dinners. Perspectives must be involved and attend 70% of all NAL functions.

Where and when are the weekly general body meetings?

NAL meetings at the University of Southern California are held on Wednesdays at El Centro Chicano at 6:00PM. El Centro Chicano is located on the third floor of the United University Church (directly adjacent to the JEP house on W. 34th and Trousdale Parkway).

What are the financial obligations?

All active members have a $40 membership fee due at the beginning of each semester, which provides all their monthly dinners and their ticket to the semester party. Arrangements can be made for financial assistance before each semester.

How many members does NAL have?

There are over 100 members of NAL and over 200 alumni.

How many chapters are a part of NAL?

Currently there are two chapters of NAL: the founding chapter at the University of Southern California and their sister chapter at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Is NAL a sorority?

NAL is not a sorority, but a sisterhood in which there is no pledging or hazing directed toward perspectives. Instead, perspectives are allowed to choose NAL and to become part of the sisterhood.

Are all members Hispanic?

NAL welcomes students of any gender, race, ethnicity, age, creed, national origin, and sexual orientation.
