History
The Residential Student Leader Honorary (RSLH) Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) at the University of Southern California (USC) was first founded in 1984 by Dr. Carol Schmitz. Although it was founded in 1984 as NRHH, it was named RSLH in 1985. In the spring of 2008, it was officially re-named to NRHH by the President, Namit Rohant. NRHH is the sister organization of the University Residential Student Community (URSC), the Resident Hall Association of USC founded in 1988.
Honor
NRHH is an honor society for the top 1% of leaders in the residential community as governed by the National Affiliate of Colleges and University Residence Halls (NACURH). NRHH membership, which cannot exceed 66 at any given time, grants honors to students excelling in scholarship, leaders, and community service. NRHH selects new members through a stringent application and interview process each fall and spring. Executive Board members are chosen in the second semester and hold positions for one academic year.
Purpose
The primary purpose of NRHH is to recognize various leaders, communities, organizations, programs, and other aspects of the university campus. NRHH reviews and selects Of-The-Month Awards for the campus wide winners. These winning nominations are then sent by NRHH to the Pacific Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (PACURH) Regional Associate Director. This director along with his regional committee decide upon “Regional Winners”, which are then sent up to the NACURH national Of-The-Month Committee for the chance to win national recognition. A special Bid Committee works on Of-The-Year Awards for the regional and national levels.
Philanthropy
Additionally, NRHH sponsors and plans many social and philanthropy events. Social events include a dinner night, dances, socials, and many more. The largest event of the year is the traditional philanthropy event, Clash of the Trojans. This annual spring semester event is a “wacky Olympics” style event that serves the kids from the neighboring elementary schools. This event is meant to teach younger children skills in leadership, teamwork, communication, discipline as well as display the importance of a college education.
Constitution
The NRHH: RSLH chapter constitution was newly revised and ratified in the spring of 2008. The new constitution includes a redefined set of executive board positions along with their responsibilities, requirements for active members, and a more efficient officer selection method. Logo
USC’s chapter of NRHH instituted a organization logo in 2008. The new logo consists of a tree on a round green background with the university and chapter names encircled above and the NRHH acronym and RSLH motto underneath. Below are explanations of each element of the logo:
TREE: The tree represent leadership as it “branches out” and inspires achievement.
GREEN BACKGROUND: The light green color behind the tree represents the chapter’s strive for an eco-friendly and sustainable future.
NAMES: The university’s name is located above the tree in the school colors with cardinal letters and a gold outline. The chapter’s full name is also included above the tree. Below the tree is the acronym NRHH representing affiliation with the national organization.
MOTTO: The motto below the tree reads, “Rethinking Recognition” representing the chapter’s efforts to redirect the attitude and beliefs of typical college students to what is important. The motto is also located below the tree because it represents the roots from which the chapter is coming.
