Committee Applications We can't get everything done without awesome committees and this is a GREAT way to get more involved in Nikkei! To apply for any of the committees that were announced at Tuesday's GM(10/27/09) check your emails for the attached committee application. You can email your applications to usc.nikkei@gmail.com or print out a hard copy and turn it into one of the officers. ***The due date has been extended to Tuesday, November 17. Ski Trip 01/10 Friday, January 15 - Monday, January 18 If you're interested in the 2010 Nikkei + Dragonboat Ski Trip, please sign up HERE. This will add you to the mailing list, and so Justin can give you some information about meetings and other important dates. Here is some preliminary information... Ski Trip 2010: Next, here is a message from Justin himself: Hey Nikkei! Glad to see many of you have signed up for ski trip! I ran the numbers, and here's what is happening this year: So, things you need to think about: yup that's it! Here's what the schedule is for the next few weeks: ***Remember, access to the slopes is not covered in the initial deposit. Lift tickets cost $47/ day. You can ski both, for only one or just chill in the cabin. If you do intend to ski, however, payments are due on Tuesday Novemeber 24th to Gavin McCarter or any other Nikkei officer. If you are skiing for only one day, be sure to let them know whether you want to go out on the first day or on the second. Updated November 18, 2009
Nikkei Youth Program 12/20/09 Sunday, December 20 Did your family immigrate to America from Japan after WWII? Want to go to Japan for FREE? If so, check out this new program being offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan! They are sponsoring FIVE students from the USA to go to Japan from March 12-23rd. If you're applying, please shoot USC Nikkei an email at usc.nikkei@gmail.com ASAP to get a formal endorsement letter from the CJACLC (California Japanese American Leadership Council)! For the past two years we've donated a little bit of time to give back to the Japanese American residents of this retirement home, so swing by VKC 158 to keep this wonderful Nikkei tradition alive. APASA Winter Formal: Rock With You 11/20/09 Friday, November 20 Come party with Nikkei at the annual Winter Formal! Nikkei will be meeting behind Leavey Library at 8:30 and then walking over to the Galen Ballroom together. Can't make it at 8? Still stop by! The party will be ending at 11:30 so come party it up in one of the biggest Asian Pacific American Student Assembly (APASA) events of the YEAR! Dress to impress (semi-formal) and entry is FREE! APASA Homecoming Tailgate | USC vs. Stanford 11/14/09 Saturday, November 14 Enjoy food and entertainment before we head to watch our football team beat Stanford! Free admission! Time TBD since game time hasn't been announced yet. Taiko will be performing at 9:30am at the APASA Tailgate so try to get there early! Admission is FREE and there'll be free food & entertainment. California Nisei Diploma Project Friday, November 13 Imagine getting kicked out of USC because of your ethnicity. During World War II when 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were imprisoned in concentration camps, there was a number of students kicked out of universities up and down the West Coast (including USC). In 2010, the California State University and the University of California systems will be giving honorary diplomas to all of those who were unable to complete their education due to the camps. USC has given the former students honorary alumni status, but has refused to give diplomas. Come learn about the California Nisei Diploma Project at a community press conference in Little Tokyo! This is a rare opportunity to learn about Japanese American history as it directly relates to you, a college student. Musubi Madness! 11/10/09 Tuesday, November 10 This Tuesday we'll be joining with USC Hawaii Club to make musubi of various shapes and sizes! We know you all can't get enough of spam musubi. Meltdown!!! 11/05/09 Thursday, November 5 Meltdown is back and MUCH better than last year and what better way to relieve your stress from midterms than clubbing with your awesome Nikkei pals?! Tickets are $15 for pre-sale & $20 at the door. Everyone who buys a ticket will be entered into a raffle for one of 4 cool prizes! This is a closed event so only us and the other socal INC schools will be there meaning: no random people! Look out for more info as Meltdown gets closer to find out when we'll be tabling on Trousdale. Rides For all of you already with tickets for Meltdown we'll be arranging rides to get everyone over to the club of course with preference to those who are paid Nikkei members in case we're short on cars. Little Tokyo Survey Project 10/31/09 Saturday, October 31 Nikkei is taking on a Survey Project in Little Tokyo and we'd love for you all to come and help us! It's an awesome opportunity to show how involved USC Nikkei can be. PLUS its a chance to get off of campus and chill in LT for a few hours. A Tragedy of Democracy 10/27/09 Tuesday, October 27 This is an event presented by the Asian Pacific American Student Service, the American Studies & Ethnicity, and the Asian American Studies Faculty. Come enjoy a talk and book signing with author Greg Robinson as he discusses his newest book, A Tragedy of Democracy. A book about the Japanese American concentration camps, this book is particularly interesting as it also details the effects of the camps on those of Japanese descent in Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and Peru. Culture Night Skit Auditions!!! 10/18/09 Sunday, October 18 Culture Night(CN) is a great way to get involved and bond with everyone else helping out with the show! So why not be a part of the skit?? We'll be distributing flyers to businesses around Little Tokyo for the survey that will happen on 10/31. This will be a great and easy opportunity to explore Little Tokyo while helping out the community. Bento-Making 101 10/13/09 Tuesday, October 13 This week we are making our very own Nikkei Bentos! What's a Bento?? Come to the GM on Tuesday to find out, but we will give you a hint: it's FOOD and its FREE if you are a paid member. Non-paid members will need to pay $5 to get in on the bento-making party. If you still want to become a member or you haven't paid your dues yet, this Tuesday is the LAST chance so bring your $25 (checks payable to SCNA) and your Nikkei 09/10 application with you. 3rd Annual Mabuhay Festival 10/10/09 Saturday, October 10 The 3rd Annual Mabuhay Festival (TMF), hosted by USC Troy Philippines, is coming up soon on October 10th at McCarthy Quad with music from Gabe Bondoc, Leejay, Manny Garcia, and much more! TMF is looking for some volunteers and Nikkei wants to represent! Volunteers will be given free admission to TMF, a free meal, and a discounted t-shirt. IM Volleyball!! 10/08/09 Thursday, October 8 We know you all are super excited for Nikkei's first IM sport of the year! We'll be playing TWO games this Thursday night at the Lyon Center so come help us kick butt or just watch and support! It's Co-ed Beginner division so we need atleast 2 girls and 6 people total at every game but the more the better. All games are in the Lyon Center gym so don't forget to bring your ID or it's a major hassle to get in. Email emilykim@usc.edu so we know if you are coming to the games this week.
