New Student Guide

So you're coming to USC... Not to worry! We'll get you through it painlessly, with enough time to tour the sights before classes begin...

1. Get into a new apartment. Check out the NGF Housing Guide for help!

2. Contact & meet with a potential first rotation advisor.

3. Take a look at the USC neuroscience orientation guide

4. Establish a bank account -- Bank of America and the USC Credit Union are the most conveniently located.

5. Set up a USC Email Account.

6. Get a USC ID Card so that you can use the Libraries!

7. Make you sure you have your health insurance and dental insurance set up so you can see a doctor at the health center if need be.

8. Register for Classes (check out the NGF Course Guide), then purchase books.

9. For some, get a driver's license at the ever-exciting California DMV.

10. Create your own webpage at USC!

11. If you are an international student get in touch with Office of International Services (OIS)

12. Apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship while you can


13. Add the NGF calendar to your favourite calendar app as follows:

For google calendar users just click the following link and the NGF calendar will be added to your set of google calendars:

i) Go to iCal
ii) Click 'Calendar' then 'Subscribe...'

For Microsoft Outlook users on Windoze:
i) Choose 'Tools' then 'Account Settings' and click the 'Internet Calendars' tab
ii) Go to the 'New Setup Dialog'
iii) paste the following URL:
http://www.google.com/calendar/ical/uscngf%40gmail.com/public/basic.ics
