Nan Li

I am a Ph.D. candidate and Viterbi fellow at the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Southern California, under the supervision of professor Burcin Becerik-Gerber and professor Lucio Soibelman in the i-lab.

My research focuses on increasing context-awareness in the built environment using advanced sensors, sensor networks, image processing and data mining technologies and algorithms. My research aims to enhance the autonomy and intelligence in the design, construction and operation of buildings, based on increased indoor context-awareness. and hence improve the safety and comfort of building occupants.

My research interests also include building energy management. Increasing energy demands coupled with diminishing energy sources have made building energy conservation an increasingly important global concern. Actively invovled in a number of U.S. DOE and NSF funded projects, I have been working on identifying potential energy wastes in buildings, and reducing these wastes with proactive and reactive controls of building systems enabled by state-of-the-art sensing and reasoning technologies.
