NAACP USC Chapter: Past Events (Fall 2004)

The Album on 7/31/04 We attended the hip-hop poetry/spoken word event called “The Album” put on at Ground Zero Coffee House (on USC’s campus) and registered young voters

Somerville Move-In Movement on 8/18/04 We aided the Somerville residents (the Black floor in USC dormitory housing) to move into their apartments and provided them with information about NAACP and adjustment to USC in general. We also registered voters and accrued new members.

Jill Scott Voter Registration Listening Party on8/30/04We held an early album release listening party for Jill Scott’s new album and registered voters as well as accrued new members at the entrance by entering them in a raffle to win Jill Scott-themed prizes. link

USC Student Involvement Fair on 9/1/04Members took shifts for 4 hours at a table set-up at this fair to promote USC’s NAACP chapter and accrue new members and register voters. We were able to explain to those walking by what the NAACP is about and what it fights for.

Black Business Expo on 9/11/04 We attended this event representing the NAACP to register voters. The two representatives from our chapter, Christina Reed and Iman Shervington spent over 5 hours there walking around to register voters as well as staying at the table set-up for them. link

Cee-Lo Voter Registration Event at House of Blues on 9/20/04Two leadership members (Richard Branch and Iman Shervington) and two general body members engaged in voter registration activities outside of the concert as people waited in line to be admitted

Athlete Voter Campaign from 10/4/04 until 10/8/04 In coordination with SAAC (the Student Athlete Advisory Council) we set-up a table in front of the cafeteria outside of the athletic building and registered athletes (and anyone else that came by) for four hours each evening that week.

Operation Activism on 10/28/04 This was our biggest event of the year and it included guest speakers (Laini Coffee, Abdul Henderson, and Aaron McGruder), musical and theatrical performances, etc. in an effort to promote mobility to the polls on November 2 nd, 2004. link
