USC NAACP Hosts Social Security Town Hall Meeting
On Monday April 11, 2005 the USC NAACP hosted a Social Security town Hall meeting at USC’s Taper Hall Auditorium. AARP and the NAACP have joined forces to educate the public about the proposed threats recently made to the nation’s Social Security system. The NAACP formally resolved to oppose any change to Social Security that may result in an “increase in vulnerability or a decrease in benefits,” as stated in the formal resolution put forth in February 2005. A diverse panel helped inform an audience of community members, USC students, and NAACP members from neighboring colleges. Points of discussion were the history of Social Security, an overview of privatization, the impact on retirees, and the impact on persons with disabilities. Charlene Muhammad, community activist and radio talk show host on KPFK, moderated the discussion.
Speakers included Ernie Powell, Associate State Director for Advocacy with the California AARP, Carmelita Tursi, Assistant Associate Director for Advocacy with the CA AARP, Helen Taylor Member/Volunteer for AARP VOTE, Shawn Casey O’Brien, Co-Host/Co-Producer for KPFK’s “Access Unlimited” and Niele Anderson, National Field Coordinator for Rock the Vote. Laini Coffee NAACP Youth & College Region 1 Field Director coordinated the event.
