A
Message from the 2008 Chair
Founded in 1999, the
Marshall Women’s Leadership Board was formed in order to satisfy an
unmet need of providing female undergraduate students at USC’s top
ranked Marshall
Business School
with the resources, knowledge and guidance necessary to meet the
challenges that working women face today. With the strength and ambition
of its members, MWLB was awarded “Best Student Organization”
and has become one of the most prestigious student organizations in Marshall as well as
at USC. It has formed a solid support system, which continues to grow,
from the Marshall Business Administration, USC, and the business
community at large.
Since its induction, MWLB has developed
into a thriving organization and continues to show a promising future.
The organization has held numerous events which include career
development workshops focusing on resumes, interviews, internships, and
personal images. In addition, we have hosted several panel discussions
with professionals from various industries. We have had the privilege of
hosting speakers such as Congresswoman Jane Harmon, Marcia Israel-Curly
(Founder, Judy’s), Karen Miles (Senior VP, Houlihan, Lokey, Howard,
and Zukin), and Archie Elwell (VP, Sony Metreon) among others.
The upcoming year will be just as
exciting and full of enthusiasm as the previous years have been. We plan
to continue the traditions of professionalism and progress but also to
further strengthen the networks of MWLB, primarily those within the
organization. Our goal this year is to reinforce the connections between
the members, other student organizations related to MWLB, Marshall and
alumni. In addition to speakers and networking functions, we plan to hold
workshops which will help each member learn how to use their resources as
well as being a resource. In addition to establishing more external
networks, MWLB will also participate again in the annual Susan G. Komen
Breast Cancer Walk and continue relations with the National Associaton of
Women Business Owners (NAWBO).
MWLB’s mission is “to
create a network among undergraduate women at Marshall that will contribute to the development
of future female business leaders.” Our vision is to not only to
fulfill this mission but to exceed it whenever possible. One independent
and resourceful woman is extraordinary. A network of them is
inspirational and incredible. We hope that you also identify with this
mission and will support the Marshall Women’s Leadership Board by
joining the legacy of women that turned a mere dream into a reality.
Best Regards,
Carly Olson, 2008-2009
Chair

The Marshall Women’s Leadership Board provides an opportunity
for undergraduate women to network with professionals, faculty,
administration and students at Marshall.
MWLB serves as both a professional and social organization for the top
female business students at USC.
History
In September 1999, Dr. Suzanne Savary, Professor of Business
Communication, and Sandy Buchan, former Director of Undergraduate Student
Services, invited the top female business students to discuss the idea of
establishing an organization focused on the development of female
business leaders. After a lively discussion, enthusiasm filled the room
and that night the MWLB was born. The Marshall Women's Leadership Board is
Marshall's
first organization dedicated to female undergraduate business students.
Organizational Structure
The structure of the MWLB is representative of a professional board.
The board consists of four committees: External Projects, Finance,
Operations, and Programming. All members of the organization are a part
of one of the above-mentioned committees.
External Projects
The external projects committee has three subcommittees: community
service, professional relations, and alumni relations. The external
projects committee's intention is to establish long-term relationships
for MWLB. One of their objectives is to cultivate relationships with both
professional business organizations like NAWBO (National Association of
Women Business Owners) and community outreach programs like those offered
through the Downtown Women's Shelter. Additionally, the committee helps
MWLB maintain relationships with USC Alumni.
Finance
The finance committee oversees all of the financial transactions of the
organization. While much attention is given towards the keeping of the
books and budget, fundraising is another highly important responsibility
for this committee. Members of this committee brainstorm fundraising
activities and develop relationships with vendors and other organizations
that are interested in supporting the MWLB.
Operations
The operations committee is divided into three sub-committees: Marketing,
Membership, and Web Development. Members of this committee are in charge
of the logistical details within these areas. They market and publicize
MWLB events and organize the recruitment process during both the Fall and
Spring semesters. Ultimately, this committee helps build MWLB brand
awareness on campus, in the community, and in the professional
realm. Operations is also in charge of retreat.
Programming
The programming committee is in charge of developing all panels,
speakers, and social events for the organization. They help organize
career related events, such as internship and resume workshops, as well
as, obtain information about national leadership conferences and
seminars. In addition, the programming committee works closely with
external projects in planning the retreat. With the guidance of the
Co-Chairs and other committees, the programming committee organizes many
of the activities and events held throughout the year.
