Hiking Log

Ideas

I am thinking about checking out some of these abandoned mines in the San Gabriels. Many of them are based around the East Fork of the San Gabriel River as well as between Iron Mountain and Mt. Baldy. Stanley Miller Mine is apparently a few miles away from the Bridge to Nowhere up the East Fork, so I am considered doing a hike to the bridge then past to check out the mine. I will have to do some investigating beforehand to see how hard it would be to navigate to the mine.

The Allison Mine lies off the southwest face of Iron Mt. It would probably be pretty difficult to reach, though there are 2 ways. One is to start up the East Fork then branch off into Allison Gulch, but to get up to the mine might involve some pretty challenging climbing. The other way is to take the Heaton Flat trail to its end at the saddle. From there, apparently there actually used to be a trail that goes down to the mine, though now it is extremely overgrown. If one is prepared for some major bushwacking, it could be possible.
