The Twilight of Mankind

by: Maurice Khayat

Years ago I had it all
I was master of the world.
I had an angel, bright and tall
Iridescent wings unfurled.

Upon the brink of death I stood
Impending dark was near.
But with a healing touch she could
Evaporate my fear.

Her heavenly voice would sing aloud
And I quivered with pure emotion.
Though I was strong, and I was proud
I lay humble in silent devotion.

She gave me love
She gave me life,
I gave her all my soul.
She touched my heart,
And cleansed myself,
Now I stand before you whole.

But-

Celestial bliss is not meant to be
My world now lies torn.
We cannot and refuse to see
That rose devoid of thorns.

I forsook her love and turned away
Impatient as I was mortal.
She asked to wait; she asked to stay
But I refused to dawdle.

A love undying is life’s true aim
More precious than a jewel,
But when it comes, we do not choose it
Oh, mortals, we are fools.
