Biography

Simin is currently a Chemical Engineering PhD candidate at the University of Southern California. She is a member of Professor Andrea M. Armani's research group working on development of novel optical sensors and microlasers.

April 2015: Simin received the USC Student Recognition Award for outstanding leadership, volunteerism, and commitment to the campus and the community (The order of Arete).

April 2015: Sam Kushner-Lenhoff, an electrical engineering undergraduate researcher Simin is mentoring, won an Honorable Mention at the USC Undergrad Symposium for his work on development of a solid state red microlaser.

April 2015: Gumi Sethi, a chemical engineering undergraduate researcher Simin is mentoring, received a Rose Hills research fellowship.

April 2015: Simin received the USC Viterbi Undergraduate Researcher Mentoring Award.

March 2015: Simin worked with pre-college students to conduct fun science projects at Wisdom Academy For Young Scientists School.

February 2015: Simin's work on the development of a solid state blue microlaser was included in an invited talk at SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco, CA (A. Armani, N. Deka, S. Mehrabani, C. Shi, A. Maker, M. Lee, A. Kovach, E. Gungor, K. Kuo, and V. Diep, Optically active silica and polymeric materials for microcavity lasers and sensors)

January 2015: Simin gave a lecture on nanocrystal quantum dots to MASC350 students.

October 2014: Simin successfully defended her PhD dissertation on Development of Hybrid Microsensors for Environmental Monitoring and Biodetection.

May 2014: Simin served as a grand award judge at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, CA.

April 2014: Simin won silver in the graduate student award competition at the Materials Research Society Spring Meeting in San Francisco, CA for her work with Audrey Harker on developing a chip-based ultraviolet monitoring sensor.

April 2014: Simin Received a travel grant from the Materials Research Society to attend the MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco, CA.

April 2014: Sam Kushner-Lenhoff, an electrical engineering undergraduate researcher Simin is mentoring, received summer undergraduate research fellowship.

March 2014: Simin, Ashley Maker, and Professor Andrea Armani published a review paper in Sensors discussing hybrid label-free sensors.

February 2014: Simin presented her work on developing an upconversion blue microlaser at SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco, CA.
