Greek Life,
Paving the way...
As Greeks we are always striving to achieve
the most out of college life. Through active leadership, a commitment
to service and a dedication to academics, brotherhood and sisterhood,
we greatly enhance the lives of both our members and those around
us. This community serves as a valuable resource to many potential
leaders out there. But don't take our word for it, visit us and
find out for yourself. Refer to the recruitment
section to find out how to meet us and learn how to become part
of this prestigious community.

Leadership: If you are looking for extracurricular activities
to take part in, USC has a plethora of opportunities of which MGC
serves as your valued resource. As the youngest council on campus,
we are constantly evolving year after year, and each successive
line of pro-active leaders positively impacts the direction and
function of the council as a whole. We are also on vigilant watch
for aspiring leaders who wish to take part in that role. There are
executive council positions, directorships, and individual chapter
positions in which you can develop your leadership abilities. And
due to the relatively small sizes of our chapters, most if not all
individuals within our chapters hold some position or another.
Recognition: As a council we celebrate the accomplishments of
our members and chapters through many venues. These include the
recognition and presentation of awards to 4.0 recipients at the
semesterly Greek Scholarship banquet and the individual efforts
of both members and chapters at our annual end of the year banquet.
Some of the awards are listed in the chapter
spotlight section (left column) as well as the member
spotlight section (left column). Our constituent chapters have
also garnished recognition by the campus. For example Zeta Sigma
Phi was awarded the 2002 Student Organizational Volunteer award
(linked article). That same year one of Zeta Sigma Phi's members,
Krisha Davis, as well as Tau Theta Pi's Chinwe Madu, each received one of seven 2002 Student Volunteer Awards (linked article)
handed out that year.
Recently, Sigma Theta Psi was awarded the Diversity Encouragement Award at the 2005 Greek Awards. |

Community Involvement: In Spring 2005, the Multicultural Greek Council participated in USC's very first Relay For Life. By participating in this 24 hour walk around the perimeter of McCarthy Quad, MGC Chapters along with other student organizations helped to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
Commitment to the community has been a long valued tradition in our council. On April 11th, 2003, members from each chapter of MGC hosted booths at Weemes
Elementary. At these booths members performed activities such as
face-painting, supervising and running various games, and generally
watching over the children who came to the event. The event was
preformed in conjunction with the school where our volunteered services
alleviated the costs of the event for the school and made many of
the activities possible. We believe that one of the most enriching
aspects of being involved in the USC community is the service and
philanthropic endeavors.
Aside from the council getting directly
involved in the community, each individual chapter has its own list
of services and events that are done on a regular basis throughout
the year. Some of these activities include: fundraising, cultural
performances, leadership conferences, volunteering time to shelters,
reading to young children, feeding the homeless, sponsoring environmental
clean-ups, and a variety of additional activities. If you want to
get involved with the community, then the chapters of MGC can definitely
get you started strong.
Philanthropies: Every chapter of MGC has exemplified a committment
to service and philanthropic endeavors. The list of philanthropies
each chapter participates in can be viewed in the chapters
section.

Scholarship: Statistics kept by
the Office of Residential and Greek Life show that the fall 2002
grade point averages of the entire Greek system (3.14) exceeded
the GPAs of their respective university peer groups: men (3.01)
and all USC undergraduates (3.09). Greeks strive to encourage high
scholastic achievement at all times. MGC chapters encourage this
through tutoring programs and study hours that help maintain high
GPAs.
Social Life: For decades, Greek-lettered organizations have
taught young collegians lessons that cannot be found anywhere else.
We teach valuable interpersonal skills, social skills, and life
skills. Chapter members develop friendships through living, studying,
learning, working, and competing together. On top of that we have
many social activities planned throughout the year to foster relationships.
A few of these activities include date functions, exchanges, tailgates,
formals, intramurals, chapter and council retreats and much more.
These activities provide everyone with a chance to meet new people
and to take a break from your studies.
Networking: One of the benefits of joining a Greek organization
is the ability to network with other Greeks. By getting to know
people via exchanges, alumni events, and activities with other chapters
as well as other Greek organizations, our members have countless
people to seek advice for academics, obtain business opportunities,
make connections in high places and learn about life. Our council
is comprised of 8 chapters working together to get goals accomplished.
Beyond the number of immediate active members on this campus, the
connections we have span the nation and across many fields. |
