marathon team email - sunday run 11/8

Hello Runners,

Contents:
1) Attendance
2) Cross-training
3) Team run on Sunday November 8
4) LA Marathon

1) Attendance at Sunday runs: If you have missed two Sunday runs already this semester you are risking your membership with the team.

We certainly don't want to kick people off, but participation in the Sunday runs is an important part of being on the team, not to mention the most critical part of training for the marathon - without the long runs you will probably get hurt as the miles increase and will have difficulty completing a marathon.

If you have missed several Sunday runs either, 1) start showing up, or 2) speak with a captain to let them know what's up and that you still want to train with the team.

2) Cross-training will be happening on Friday (11/6). We will meet at 7:05 am ON CROMWELL FIELD - expect the whole session to be about 40 minutes.

We'll be trying some new stuff, so come if you can

Another option for cross-training is a spinning class; team captain Evan Snyder leads one at 5:30 on Friday evenings in the Robinson Fitness Room at the Lyon Center, there are other classes also run through Rec. Sports.

3) Team Run on Sunday (11/8):

We will be running at Dockweiler Beach in El Segundo - there will options of 6, 7, and 8 miles, here's the map:

http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/us/ca/el%20segundo/608125737235666149

* for 6 miles, turn around at 23rd Street

* for 7 miles, at the first pier

* for 8 miles, at the steps

We'll go over directions again before we start.

** Bring a jacket and long pants, it could be cold and windy if you are sitting around after the run**

Getting to Dockweiler: we will carpool, meet in the Denny's Parking lot at the UV at 730 am.
To offer a carpool ride or request one, go to the carpool section on the marathon team website: http://www-scf.usc.edu/~marathon/carpool/
- click on Sunday Carpool and follow the directions, the login is 'runner' and the password is 'runner262'

- PLEASE if you have a car, volunteer to drive for the carpool

Directions to the start of the route:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=1115+W+Adams+Blvd,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90007+(University+Village)&daddr=Vista+Del+Mar+%26+W+Imperial+Hwy,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90293+(Dockweiler+Beach)&geocode=FdhJBwIdGh7z-CEAnx3Xq6XXbCm5N2CB7sfCgDFbljPvPFtyNA%3BFXe-BQIdb9Pw-CGmSZ7hiUKUQA&hl=en&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=33.930257,-118.417168&sspn=0.114799,0.133381&ie=UTF8&ll=33.933182,-118.435906&spn=0.001794,0.002084&t=h&z=19

Head south on the 110, west on the 105 until it turns into the Imperial Highway, follow this to the end. For parking, turn right on Vista Del Mar and park along this street (the west side is probably better); WE WILL MEET AT THE RESTROOM AREA TO THE NORTH OF THE PARKING LOT - look at the map in satellite view to get an idea

4) Sign up for the LA Marathon sooner than later - it will sell out, and it would be a shame to have trained with the team and then not be able to sign up.

Questions? Send us an email - see you on Sunday (or Friday)!

carpool and set your clocks back

Hi team,
just a reminder, if you are going to use the carpool (either riding or driving), sign up so that there is an accurate count.

Carpool with people going about the same pace as you, so that you can all leave at about the same time.
If you think you will be taking a longer time to finish the route, go with a coach

Set your clocks back one hour tonight...

Happy Halloween, see you tomorrow

marathon team email - sunday run 11/1

Hello Runners,

Contents:
1) Daylight Savings Time
2) Cross-training
3) Team run on Sunday November 1
5) LA Marathon

1) Daylight Savings Time is this weekend, remember to set your clocks BACK on Saturday night; however, the worst thing that can happen is that you'll be an hour early.

2) Cross-training will be happening on Friday (10/30). We will meet at 7 am at the Lyon Center and then jog over to Cromwell field to work out - expect the whole session to be about 40 minutes.

Cross-training is important for runners - it will go a long way towards limiting injuries.

Another option for cross-training is a spinning class; team captain Evan Snyder leads one at 5:30 on Friday evenings in the Robinson Fitness Room at the Lyon Center, there are other classes also run through Rec. Sports.

3) Team Run on Sunday (11/1): This will be our first off-campus run, so procedure will be a little different.

We will be doing 'Griffith Park Trail run' - there will options of 4, 6, and 8 miles, here's the map: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/ca/los-angeles/388125653397973482

* the turn around point for the four mile route is at the first bridge you'll come to (near 2 on the map, check the satellite map for a good view)

* for 6 miles, turn around at the second tunnel (blue exclamation point on the map)

* for 8 miles, turn around where Forest Lawn Drive comes into the park

We'll go over directions again before we start.

Getting to Griffith Park: we will carpool to Griffith, meet in the Denny's Parking lot at the UV at 730 am.
To offer a carpool ride or request one, go to the carpool section on the marathon team website: http://www-scf.usc.edu/~marathon/carpool/
- click on Sunday Carpool and follow the directions, the login is 'runner' and the password is 'runner262'
- PLEASE if you have a car, volunteer to drive for the carpool, it will make things much better for doing off-campus runs.

Directions to the start of the route: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=USC,+University+Village&daddr=34.068018,-118.23864+to:4400+Crystal+Springs+Dr,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90027-1454+(Griffith+Park+Pony+Ride)&geocode=FQsuBwIdIxfz-CEso0lCNnIaAg%3B%3BFbi2CAIdn0bz-CGxhOgZA76z8g&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=12&via=1&sll=34.07889,-118.25272&sspn=0.168627,0.261955&ie=UTF8&ll=34.121149,-118.273273&spn=0.005267,0.008186&t=h&z=17

Park in the lot on the right hand side of Crystal Springs Drive, just past the ponies and concession area.

5) Sign up for the LA Marathon sooner than later - it will sell out, and it would be a shame to have trained with the team and then not be able to sign up.

Subject: Pac-10 Fitness Challenge Info

Hi All,

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. As all of you may know, the Pac-10 Fitness Challenge will start this Monday, Oct. 26 until Friday, Oct. 30. I've attached a Pac-10 flyer for those who want to spread the word to your classes or want to learn more about the event. However, to simplify things, the basics are as follows:

All Pac-10 schools will be involved in the challenge
Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters can register for the event through the Pac-10 Fitness Challenge link on http://www.usc.edu/recsports or directly by going to http://pac10fitnesschallenge.wsu.edu/usc/default.aspx
Participants must remember to record their daily physical activities through their account on the Pac-10 Fitness Challenge website to help us reach our Challenge goals
The Pac-10 goals are to reach 5,000,000 total minutes (of physical activity) and 20,000 participants
USC's specific Pac-10 goals are to:
Beat UCLA.... Again!
Increase OVERALL MINUTES of participation to 500,000 minutes
Increase TOTAL NUMBER of participants to 2,000
Participants can get details on workout classes and events provided by RecSports for that Pac-10 Fitness Challenge week by going onto the Challenge website and looking under "Get the Latest": http://pac10fitnesschallenge.wsu.edu/usc/default.aspx
All USC Workout classes and access to the Lyon Center will be free during the week of the Challenge
The easiest way for your classes to participate is to make sure they register and log in their minutes after their USC Workout classes.

Let us know if any of you have any other questions.

Thank you,

Yao

Marathon Team email

Hello Runners,

Contents:
1) Waivers, checks, etc.
2) Cross-training
3) Team run on Sunday October 25
4) Marathon Team facebook page and Twitter account
5) Nike human race

1: On the team website, http://www-scf.usc.edu/~marathon/attendance.shtml, you will now find a spreadsheet recording what items you have turned in and your attendance for Sunday runs. Please check this and make sure all items are accounted for.

If you are missing something print it out from this page, http://www-scf.usc.edu/~marathon/joining.shtml, and turn it into a captain.
If you think there is an error regarding your info, let one of the captains know and we'll get it straightened out.
Technically you need to have turned in waiver and code of conduct forms in order to practice with the team. We also need your applications so we know what size jersey/t-shirts to order and we need the checks to pay for this stuff.

2) Cross-training will be happening on Friday (10/23). We will meet at 7 am at the Lyon Center and then jog over to Cromwell field to work out - expect the whole session to be about 40 minutes.

3) Team Run on Sunday (10/25): The run will begin at Lyon Center at 8 AM. If your parents are in town this weekend feel free to bring them along.

We will be doing 'the Olympic loop' - a six mile route. Here's the map: http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/us/ca/los%20angeles/877125591518511712

4) The 2009-2010 Marathon Team has a facebook page and group, you are encouraged to join it - it might used for coordinating some non-running events later in the year.

We also have a new Twitter account: https://twitter.com/USCMarathon - so subscribe to that if you would like.

5) The Nike Human Race is on 10/24 (at 12:01 am) - runners must be in the starting corral at 11 pm on 10/23. If you would like to meet up with other Marathon team members to head over to the race, we'll meet at the south end of campus near Mudd Philosophy Hall and the statue of the little tire-biter dog at 10:15 pm.

Questions? Send us an email - see you on Sunday (or friday)!
