Hi! My name is Leslie Schwene and I am a senior at USC. I am majoring in Business Administration and have a minor in Sports Media Studies. At USC, I am a member of the Marching Band as the section leader of the USC Silks (the color guard). I have had the opportunity to travel to many interesting places to perform with the TMB!
I am from Huntington Beach, California and have spent the last 4 summers as an Ocean Lifeguard for the City of Huntington Beach. As a junior lifeguard, I was chosen as one of forty students to study lifeguarding abroad in New Zealand. My job today involves continually watching the water and ensuring the safety of the thousands who come to "Surf City" each day.
I am also proud to be called a "Lutheran Trojan" and love our family of faith here at LCM@USC! Although we are made up of diverse backgrounds and come from different parts of the country, we are a tight-knit community. We gather weekly and monthly for a variety of educational, social and service events. Here are a handful of us pictured together at this year's Easter Sonrise Service at Seal Beach!
Our Pastor, Dan Gibson, is very approachable, takes an interest in our lives, prays for us, and remains in regular contact with us. Like me, he is a great lover of the beach and likes to bring us there regularly to "remember our Baptism". Here he closes his Easter message with a special song: "I Saw the Sea."
I'd like to give a special "shout out" for LCM's fabulous Peer Ministers! These outstanding student leaders help plan and implement our events. They serve in doing everything from helping prepare weekly community meals, to leading weekly Bible studies! I was proud to be part of the "laying on of hands" portion at our last peer minster installation pictured here!
LCM has strong ecumenical ties here at USC. Here Pastor Dan just grilled up a batch of his world-famous "Luther Dogs" (beer-boiled-barbequed brats) for our weekly community meal. Yum! Joining us are members of the UUC (United University Church) who hosts "A Community Place" where students prepare sack meals for the homeless in our surrounding neighborhood.
Our partnership continues to strengthen with our neighboring Lutheran congregation, St. Marks. We weekly worship in their sanctuary and participate in various joint activities. Here we are gathered around donations collected for the upcoming ELCA's "God's Work. Our Hands" event that serviced the Skid Row Community in Los Angeles this Fall.
Last spring we joined other young adults from around the Southwest California Synod for a mission trip to the Rancho San Juan Bosco Orphanage in Tecate, Mexico. It was truly a life-changing experience for all and we look forward to returning again next year! Where else can you find Lutheran students from USC and UCLA serving side by side?
The Lutheran Campus Ministry at USC is a worshiping Christian community who gather to deepen our faith, challenge our mind, embody servanthood, cultivate care and compassion, and have fun in our life's journey. We are committed to practicing and extending grace within and beyond USC.
