Forms of Destruction

There are many forms of vandalism at Native American sacred sites. These forms include a range of actions from community development to criminal activity.

Both of these actions ocurred at Indian Rock. The site is in the middle of a residential area, developers even managed to build a house and garden at Indian Rock. With this house came the introduction of non-native, even parasitic plants to the site. In recent years, the San Luis Rey in cooperation with the California State University at San Marcos have removed many of these plants.

Within the last year, the site has been marred by gang graffiti. Gangs often use graffiti to delineate their boundaries, mark their territory. Often a gang presence goes hand in hand with an increase in criminal activity. This happens to be true of this region of San Diego, where crime has steadily been rising for the past 5 to 10 years.
