Parental notification proposition back on the California ballot

Proposition 85 is causing a stir in California. The proposition would amend the Constitution and require that a physician notify the parent of a minor at least 48 hours before performing the procedure. The proposition does not call for consent; a girl would still have a right to an abortion. This is the second time a parental notification initiative has been on the ballot. A similar proposition was rejected by voters last November.

Opponents of the proposition fear its passage would discourage young women from seeking medical care if they were not guaranteed doctor-patient confidentiality. Opponents include Planned Parenthood and the College Democrats. Both groups are concerned that the proposition is an attempt to chip away at a woman's right to choose. They believe that it is part of a larger agenda.

Proponents of Proposition 85 say the measure is about children’s safety. They believe that an abortion should be like every other medical procedure and the parents should be notified. Supporters include the California Catholic Conference and the College Republicans. There organizations also hope the proposition will help stop sex between underage girls and adult men.
