Adam C. Lammert
B.A., M.S., Ph.D. Student
I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. at the University of Southern California in the Department of Computer Science. As a member of the Signal Analysis and Interpretation Laboratory (SAIL), headed by Dr. Shrikanth Narayanan, I work on different aspects of speech, language, and human behavior.
I'm interested in understanding cognition by taking an approach that's grounded in the external world. This asserts the primacy of perception and action for understanding behavior and cognition. How do perception-action systems function and how are they implemented in biological systems? If we really understand them, then can we implement artificial systems that are similar?
Questions about cognition, perception and action have been examined in fields as diverse as robotics, phonetics, neuroscience, biomechanics and many others. I believe that it is crucial to take a multidisciplinary approach. Progress will come from combining the scientific, empirical and technological insights from the variety of perspectives on these questions.
