Doheny vision research center @ USC About my research ... My research goal is to study the effect of electrical stimulation in different degenerate states of the retina. This project consists of two major parts. Study of electrophysiological response is conducted in vivo setup. In the past two years, I learnt and practiced surgery and recording techniques in a rodent model. Study of retinal morphology in different degenerate states is the second part of this project. Techniques such as tissue sectioning, fixation and immunostaining are required. I was first trained to be an engineer in my early education. Conducting biological experiments was indeed a challenge to me at the beginning stage. Through the guidance and teaching from my advisors and postdoc fellows in the lab, my surgical and extracellular recording skills have been polished. I also learnt the process of setting up an electrophysiology lab through purchasing lab equipments and installation of different kinds of biomedical systems. |

My research field is neural engineering.
I am part of the bioelectronics research team in University of Southern California (USC). Our resarch goal is to develop an electronic
retinal implant for the treatment of blindness due to retinitis pigmentosa. Using the first generation Argus I retinal implant,
six patients could perform light detection, motion detection and simple pattern recognition. The second generation Argus II retinal
implant has been developed and under clinical tests. Argus II implant recipients are hoped to perform higher-resolution pattern
recognition and navigation. My supervisors are Dr. James Weiland and Dr. Mark Humayun. Lab website:
