During the 1950s California saw the development of Mid-Century Modernism in architecture and design. Leading the way with this trend was the work of Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson. The Eames designed one of the Case Study Houses in Pacific Palisades. This program was founded by the editor of Arts and Architecture Magazine, John Entenza. The idea was to create fabulously designed houses cheaply, so everyone could afford this new style. What they ended up with was a classic statement in steel, glass and light.

Another leader in the area of modern design was George Nelson, who designed tables, clocks and the pre-plastic fiberglas bubble lamps. His influence is still felt today as designers rediscover this innovator from the past. Other influences came from Europe, and Jean Prouve from France was especially noteworthy as a major innovator in industrial designs.
