Q: What kind of organizations employ graduates of the Master of Building Science program, eg. government, private sector , architecture firms etc.?
A: We have graduates who work in each of the areas you mentioned. Many of our students work for architectural offices of some sort. They are especially valuable because they have technical expertise (typically their thesis area.) Many work for consultants in structures, energy or lighting or have set up their own consulting firms. Some of our graduates are now faculty at other universities. Some work for research centers. A few have gone to work for governments, either in writing codes or in supervising construction. A growing number work for software firms, typically specializing in three dimensional development. There are others who have invented their own professions. Two have built up computer firms serving the entertainment industry with virtual objects, transformations and animations. You see their work on television, in movies and in commercials. One designs and builds boats, another works in massive construction project supervision (in Africa) for the Saudi Development Bank as part of the World Bank. This is a particularly broad range when you realize that we typically graduate about 6 students per year.
Q: What are the kinds of positions for graduates eg. as analysts, researchers or architects and designers in the field of environmental design?
A: As mentioned above, the range of positions varies widely. Most graduates are hired quickly, depending on the state of the profession at the moment. Architects hire graduates as architects and designers. Consultants hire graduates as analysts and design advisers. Research centers and universities fill positions in research. Universities usually look for someone who held a Teaching Assistantship, as well. Governments hire administrative assistants. Most students who end up owning a firm start out by working for someone else for a year or two.
Q: Have many graduate students been placed in architecture firms and could you tell me who these companies are?
A: The list of firms is too long to detail, but several recent placements come to mind:
