Day 8: A day of rest in Santa Fe

August 7, 2005
Albuquerque, NM to Flagstaff, AZ

Not a very eventful drive today. A lot of desert, all of it beautiful. Lots of billboards advertising Indian shops and casinos. Lots of beautiful clouds.

I stopped in Gallup, NM, which seemed to consist of three commercial strips: Hotels, shopping and downtown, which was nearly entirely stores selling Indian art and jewelry. Then I stopped at the Arizona border. More Indian art, jewlerly, etc.

As I drove up toward Flagstaff, I could see the storms from miles away. The land is so flat there, except for the mountains surrounding the city. Here in Flagstaff it is actually chilly and rainy. Downtown was nice, but a little repetitive on the offerings. It caters to outdoorsy people, particularly tourists headed to the Grand Canyon, which is about 80 miles away.
