Day 6: Leaving Amarillo
(as fast as possible)

August 5, 2005
Amarillo, TX to Albuquerque, NM

Sorry to say, but Amarillo isn't much of a town. I couldn't find any wireless there. Which does not necessarily mean a city is bad. It's just that this city is so glum they seem resigned to life in the dark ages. I went to the library and they said, "um, where do you think you are?" Well I thought I was in a city. Apparently not. And I wasn't too sure about their zoo either. If looked more like a farm. But I still thought Texas was beautiful. I saw Cadillac Ranch from I-40, which was fortunate since it isn't advertised by any signs.

New Mexico started to look just like I expected it to, with beautiful mesas and flat plains.

I got off the interstate a bit to see Route 66 in Santa Rosa. It seems that Route 66 in most places is really just what is now Business Route 40. Then it just disappears.

I highly recommend the Silver Moon Lodge in Albuquerque. They gave Rosco a catnip mouse and treats. But then again, they also charged an extra $10 to have a cat. I could have kept the ten bucks and they could have kept their treats and we would have been even. Nevertheless, it was a well-kept classic Route 66 kind of place at a reasonable price.

Albuquerque has some nice stores I was actually able to get to because I got here by 4 (thanks to the time change). It's been frustrating to always get into town after the stores close.
