of thinking about Los Angeles's urban/rural fringe. Daniels describes the fringe
as being low density, non-urbanized areas within metro areas. We can also look
at distance from downtown, and take highways into account with a commute range.
But this ignores the fact that Los Angeles is increasingly not a central-city
